About the Role
Phlebotomists specialize in drawing blood from patients. Responsibilities include interviewing and preparing patients for blood draws, following strict safety procedures to minimize risk of contact with infectious materials.
Duties also involve record-keeping and labeling to ensure accurate testing of specimens.
Key Responsibilities
- Patient Identification: Accurately identify patients using wristbands, documents, or visual identification
- Specimen Collection: Assemble supplies and equipment according to established standards, policies, and procedures
- Priority Management: Identify Stat, timed, or routine priorities
- Venipuncture Selection: Determine suitable venipuncture methods based on patient age and health
- Patient Reassurance: Help patients relax and find suitable veins for puncture
- Blood Drawing: Use proper equipment and techniques to draw blood
- Waste Disposal: Dispose of sharps, needles, and medical waste properly
- Test Tube Order: Follow proper test tube order of draw
- Personal Protective Equipment: Use appropriate PPE
- Sample Quality: Ensure optimal quality and quantity of samples
- Labeling and Delivery: Label test tubes correctly and send/deliver them for testing
- Multiple Attempts: Do not attempt to draw a patient more than twice; request help when necessary
- Patient Information: Answer patient questions and provide useful information
- Patient Records: Keep accurate patient records
- Health and Safety: Adhere to all relevant health and safety standards
- Reaction Monitoring: Monitor patients for reactions and equipment operations
- Aftercare Education: Educate patients on immediate aftercare
- Cleanliness: Maintain a clean and sanitary space
- Specimen Storage: Use appropriate procedures for specimen storage and centrifugation (if trained)
- Patient Confidentiality: Ensure patient confidentiality
- Company Meetings: Attend required company meetings and training programs
Requirements
- High School Degree or Equivalent
- Phlebotomy Technician Certificate (Preferred)
- Hospital or Major Lab Training Program (for those without a certificate)
- Understanding of standard blood drawing practices and procedures
- 2 years of experience as a phlebotomist
- Excellent interpersonal skills and communication
- Able to work flexible hours, including nights, evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts
- Adherence to safety regulations and operating instructions
- Aseptic and sterilization techniques knowledge
- Valid State-issued driver's license with a good driving record
- Adequate automobile insurance
- Access to a reliable vehicle in good condition
