What are the responsibilities and job description for the Intern position at Centex Materials?
Position Summary
We are seeking to fill two internship position focused on the construction industry. Our ideal applicant is a current student of an engineering or construction program. We do not require prior industry experience and are looking for an aspiring student willing to learn the full cycle of the ready mix industry.
Primary Duties
- Learn how the quarrying process works and how to safely operate various pieces of equipment in a mining environment.
- Learn about the various ASTM standards along with local governing specifications of aggregates
- Apply that knowledge to improve our quality control program
- Learn how a batch plant operates, inventories are managed, and the overall logistics involved in ready mix
- Work along QC technician collecting and testing concrete samples of various pours
- Review historical quality data and work with the QC manager to identify trends
- Identify and present how we could improve our operations to the management team at the end of the summer based on everything learned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Must be able to work 12 hour shifts, weekends, overtime, and holidays as needed.
- Must be able to read equipment operating manual
- Must be able to complete pre-shift inspection forms
- Must be able to read and interpret gauges
- Must be able to wear all required safety equipment & PPE
- Must be able to communicate over CB radio or with hand signals and warning sounds, with coworkers regarding movement of vehicles and mobile equipment.
- Must be service orientated with proven ability to work in a TEAM environment
Environmental Conditions
- Majority of work is performed outdoors.
- Exposure to elements of weather to include extremes in heat, humidity, cold, dust and moisture for extended periods.
- Occasionally/frequently exposed to rough, muddy and icy surface conditions.
- Intermittent exposure to high noise levels and truck vibration.
- Frequent exposure to cement, concrete, admixtures, dust, diesel fuel, and other substances that may cause burns, be toxic or explosive if handled incorrectly.
- Frequently exposed to water and wet conditions.
