Summary:
Summer Transition Enrichment Program Experience (STEP), as a part of the Center for Diversity & Inclusion (CDI), is responsible for the development, planning and implementation of the STEP Experience that supports first-year students in their transition to the university and contribute to student success and retention. The STEP Graduate Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director of Student Success, Transition & Retention and will also work closely with two (2) undergraduate STEP Student Coordinators (STUCOs) to manage all STEP Experience components. The STEP Coordinator will have the opportunity to connect with professionals across student and academic affairs at American University to gain insights into the institution and the field.
Responsibilities:
1.) Program Communication Management
Will share the aspects of the program through different media like websites, social media, parent and family engagement newsletters, etc.
Communicate with on and off-campus, guest speakers, STEP cohort and CDI staff about workshops, cluster groups, excursions, etc.
2.) Administration
Will partake in developing and implementing the STEP curriculum.
Administer and manage the assessment/evaluation process.
Collect and gather all items needed for producing the program's final report and guiding the overall wrap-up of the program to name a few.
3.) Event logistics
The STEP Graduate Coordinator will coordinate with CDI staff and campus partners to manage event setups, ensuring all materials are prepared and rooms are ready for facilitators.
Responsibilities also include maintaining supplies and overseeing room cleanup after events.
4.) Supervision
Shares direct supervision of two (2) STUCO’s and forty (30) STEP Cohort members.
Specific responsibilities include onsite management of the STEP Experience regarding move-in, orientation, assessment, and outreach.
Will be the immediate point of contact for STEP staff after business hours.
Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work:
30-35 hours a week (for 7 weeks)
Dates of Employment: 06/23/2025– 08/11/2025
Compensation:
$ 17.50 per hour.
Housing: single bedroom.
Meals: onboarding and program only.
Transportation: Metro pass provided via metro for STEP outings
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required with 1-2 years of experience in Student Affairs or related field.
Current graduate student in a master's program in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field at American University are highly encouraged to applied.
Applicant must demonstrate project management, event logistics, excellent presentation skills; leadership skills; strong communication, strong critical thinking skills and interpersonal skills (including conflict resolution); excellent time management and organizational skills.
Applicants must be prepared to work long hours during the week and work weekends during onboarding sessions and the first week of the summer program.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office and general computer skills are necessary.
Self-motivated and able to work independently.
Strong support skills for peers and program students.
Ability to perform well under stress, with effective problem-solving and decision-making/
Strong time management, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to set boundaries and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Prior experience working with parents or transfer students and/or advising (or supervising) undergraduate students is preferred but not required.
