Autonomously performs complex diagnostic ultrasound imaging procedures for patients of all ages, under the supervision of qualified physicians for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Diagnostic sonographers take the initiative to confirm the imaging orders for completeness and accuracy. Reviews patient history and supporting clinical data for medical necessity. Responsible for contacting the ordering physician if an inadequate reason for test is supplied. Sonographers utilize advanced knowledge to perform diagnostic procedures (inpatient and outpatient settings, including portable and O.R. examinations) by producing, assessing, and evaluating ultrasound images and related data. Sonographers are required to exercise independent judgment in the interpretation and analysis of exams, and provide a preliminary diagnosis of the technical findings to the physician
Required Education: Associated Degree or completion of a Certification Program in Ultrasonography, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, or Radiology upon hire of an accredited sonography program and/or ARDMS registered (or registry eligible) in the areas of abdomen, obstetrics/gynecology (OB/GYN), vascular technology (RVT) or Cardiac echo (RDCS). Registry eligible candidates must become ARDMS registered in abdomen within 6 months of employment or registered in adult echo or vascular within 1 year of employment
Required Certifications and Licensures : Certified as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) or RDCS by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), or Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification from American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
Performs Echocardiograms on pediatric to geriatric patients in accordance with department protocols and Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echo Labs (ICAEL)
Takes cardiovascular images that contain accurate measurements and are reproducible; Image quality meets diagnostic objectives for Stroobants Cardiovascular
Performs quality vascular exams including carotid artery duplex, upper and lower extremity peripheral venous and arterial duplex exams as well as physiological testing of upper and lower extremities, according to protocol
Acquires quality vascular images in accordance with Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL) and department protocols
Prepares and positions patients for testing, and attaches appropriate equipment for procedures, such as EKG, physiologic arterial, cardiovascular testing, etc., according to established protocol
Acquires high-quality D/M-Mode/colorflow and Doppler, Contrast Echocardiography and micro-bubble contrast images according to protocol
Compiles study data and creates preliminary reports for physicians to assist with Cardiologist interpretation for vascular
Assists the cardiologist with stress testing
Participates in Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) process; maintains database; enters study results and compiles reports for annual accreditation requirements
Must live or stay within minutes of the hospital. Be available for on-call duty as needed, usually - days a month
May perform other duties as assigned or requested and job specification can be modified or updated at any time
