Job Summary
The Upward Bound Summer Assistant is a temporary, seasonal position offering supervision and advisement to high school students during the TRIO Upward Bound Summer Program. Upward Bound is a U.S Department of Education federally funded educational opportunity program that prepares eligible high school students to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. The 6-week summer program offers a summer component focused on enhancing the academic skills of the participants and provides participants with fast-paced, intensive academic coursework and other social, cultural and recreational enrichment activities. The primary objective of the Upward Bound Summer Assistant is to ensure the well-being of program members in grades 9 - 11, regarding health, safety, morale, discipline, interpersonal relationships, and academics during the residential and non-residential portion of the Upward Bound Summer Program. Upward Bound Summer Assistants are expected to reside and sleep in their assigned housing during the designated residential week.
Responsibilities
Applicants must be a sophomore or higher status in college, a recent college graduate, or graduate student with the ability to tutor and mentor high school students in either college preparatory math through pre-calculus, natural sciences, English, or foreign language.
Background Verification: As a condition of employment, all candidates accepting an offer of employment for a full-time, part- time, temporary, student worker, or volunteer position, will be required to undergo a Background Verification. Employment with Central Arizona College is contingent upon the successful completion of the background verification. The level the background verification for this position is: Standard level.
All applicants must be at least 18 years of age or older to be considered for this position.

Important Notice: As a condition of employment, all full time Central Arizona College employee's automatically become members of the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). This is a pension system that requires mandatory contributions from the employee with a matching contribution from the employer. The 24-25 fiscal year contribution rate is 12.27%. Please note this rate is subject to change on a fiscal year basis. Membership to ASRS is a condition of employment and is not optional unless you are at least 65 years of age and meet the opt out eligibility requirements, or are a retiree from ASRS . Responsibilities
- Develop positive and supportive relationships with Upward Bound students, mentoring them on academic, personal, social, and college/career concerns.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining a positive and safe environment in the UB residence hall for students and staff, creating an atmosphere that appreciates the diverse cultures, traditions, lifestyles, and beliefs of all students.
- Assist with planning, leading, implementing and participating in free-time andstructured activities for the participants during the residential week.
- Assist in supervision of participants at recreation, co-curricular activities, and meals.
- Provide academic assistance to students either in a group or in individual setting. Help students achieve a better understanding of specific subject material. In addition, assist program participants in the completion and review of homework and in-class assignments.
- Assist in monitoring students' arrival and dismissal.
- Maintain student confidentiality as appropriate.
- Assist in handling and/or refer student disciplinary issues, crises and personal issues to appropriate staff.
- Maintain program rules and expectations.
- Meet with UB Director weekly to ascertain participant's progress and address any concerns including but not limited to, inappropriate student behavior and violations of UB rules and regulations.
- Participation in training workshop prior to start of summer component
- This position requires occasional sitting, frequent walking up to a mile or more at times.
- Majority of work is performed indoors in a controlled climate as well as outdoors in summer related weather elements.
