Position Summary
The Department Chair of Natural Sciences and Mathematics provides academic leadership and administrative oversight for the department at Central Baptist College. This role requires a commitment to excellence in teaching, service, and program development while fostering a collaborative and innovative learning environment. The Chair must possess strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills to support faculty and students in achieving departmental and institutional goals. Additionally, the Chair is expected to uphold and promote the mission of Central Baptist College, transforming lives through education that integrates Christian faith and academic excellence in a Christ-centered environment.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Leadership & Program Development
- Teach a 12-credit hour course load per semester in Biology or a related discipline.
- Provide vision and leadership for the department’s academic programs, ensuring alignment with institutional goals.
- Oversee curriculum development, course updates, and new program initiatives while ensuring adherence to accreditation standards.
- Conduct regular assessments of the department’s programs and use findings to enhance instruction and student learning.
- Lead efforts in preparing for program reviews and accreditation requirements.
- Maintain and update course syllabi for all courses within the department.
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
Faculty Management & Professional Development
- Supervise and mentor faculty, supporting professional growth and instructional excellence.
- Lead faculty recruitment efforts, including hiring, onboarding, and evaluating faculty performance.
- Prepare contracts for adjunct faculty and oversee their orientation and integration into the department.
- Ensure faculty effectively utilize the institution’s learning management system (LMS) for content delivery and student engagement.
- Provide constructive feedback and professional development opportunities to faculty members.
- Maintain records of faculty academic qualifications and professional achievements.
Administrative Oversight & Operational Management
- Oversee the department’s operations, including scheduling courses, managing budgets, and allocating resources efficiently.
• Develop course schedules that meet institutional and student enrollment needs. • Monitor teaching loads within the department to ensure fairness and compliance with institutional policies.
- Collect, analyze, and report data for annual reviews and institutional assessment.
Student Success, Advisement & Recruitment
- Promote student success through academic advising, mentoring, and retention initiatives.
- Serve as an academic advisor while also overseeing advising efforts within the department.
- Address student concerns and facilitate resolution of academic issues.
- Ensure faculty are utilizing Dropout Detective as a proactive tool for monitoring student progress and retention.
- Oversee and participate in recruitment efforts for the Natural Sciences and Mathematics department, including outreach to prospective students and engagement in enrollment initiatives.
- Support and encourage student engagement in organizations and extracurricular activities relevant to the department.
Collaboration, Outreach & Institutional Contribution
- Serve on the Academic Affairs Committee and participate in institutional decisionmaking.
- Work with faculty, administration, and external partners to enhance funding opportunities, research collaborations, and program growth.
- Advocate for the department within the institution and the broader academic and professional communities.
- Engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and contribute to institutional initiatives.
Qualifications
- Required: Master's degree in biology or a closely related field. (Ph.D. preferred)
- Minimum of three years of teaching experience at the collegiate level.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in academic administration, program development, or departmental management.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to integrating Christian faith with academic excellence in a Christ-centered environment.
