General Description

The Controller is one of the principal finance staff of Central City Health (CCH). This position will be responsible for the day-to-day operations within the department including, but not limited to, recording of all accounting transactions, accounts payable, payroll, and grant administration. This position will be responsible for the coordination and completion of annual financial and compliance audits which are to be conducted by an independent accounting firm. In addition, the Controller will assist the Director of Finance & Revenue Cycle and CFO with budget preparation and medium to long-term strategic planning.

Responsibilities

  • Manages month-end/year-end close process to ensure timely closings.
  • Work with Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) to develop reporting standards and Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s).
  • Ensures the timely recording of all claim’s revenue, adjustments and write off uncollectible balances.
  • Reconcile revenue from internal sources with external sources as well as monitoring of claim denials, rejections, and unbilled services.
  • Ensures timely and accurate recording of bi-weekly payrolls.
  • Ensures timely reconciliation of all Balance Sheet accounts including resolution of all reconciling items.
  • Assists the Director of Finance & Revenue Cycle and CFO in preparation of annual budgets and forecasts.
  • Reviews/updates of policies and procedures and ensure staff compliance.
  • Reviews/updates system of internal controls annually.
  • Assists with providing coaching, mentoring and supervision of staff; ensures high standards of performance by proactively addressing issues through coaching and disciplinary action.
  • Performs other tasks/projects as assigned.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of recent progressive finance and/or accounting experience required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of leadership experience or progressive responsibility required.
  • Valid State of Michigan Accounting licensure preferred.
  • Experience with Office 365 applications (skillful level experience working with MS Excel) required. Experience includes pivot tables and v-lookups in order to analyze large amounts of data.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Skills

  • Broad knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulation; knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems.
  • Skill in analyzing financial data and preparing reports, statements and projections.
  • Knowledge of short and long term budgeting and forecasting, rolling budgets, and product line profitability analysis.
  • Ability to prioritize daily tasks, anticipate Leadership needs and propose proactive solutions; maintains composure during stressful situations occurring as a result of workloads and/or deadlines.
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions where precedents may not be established.

  • Aptitude to manage multiple responsibilities efficiently within a broad scope of functional areas.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong analytical and/or operational problem-solving skills.
  • Discretion, confidentiality, tact, and sound judgment to deal with sensitive issues.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Walking, sitting, and/or standing for prolonged periods of time may be required.
  • Normal office environment with exposure to noise, dust, or extreme temperatures.
  • Must be available to work all hours scheduled. These include but are not limited to early mornings, evenings and weekend hours as determined by the organization and Senior Leadership.
  • Work hours may shift depending on project or program needs.
  • May have close contact with clients and/or their living environments which could include potential exposure to contagious diseases, unpleasant odors and/or to bug/pest infestations.
  • Must possess and maintain an acceptable background check clearance, certifications, licensures and/or training as required by Central City Health, federal/state/county agencies, and other entities.
