Job Overview
The job entails overseeing the safe handling, documentation, and disposal of hazardous materials, including volatile organic compounds, while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Responsibilities include ordering chemicals, solvents, PPE, and other supplies, preparing hazardous waste for transport, maintaining safety data sheets (SDS), and conducting regular site inspections. The role also involves providing training on hazardous materials and waste management regulations, performing emergency response duties, and being on-call for urgent situations. Additionally, the position requires managing personal protective equipment (PPE) for various departments, conducting mock audits, servicing scales, and maintaining inventories of hazardous materials. The role emphasizes safety, compliance, and proactive management of hazardous materials throughout their lifecycle.

Duties

  • Manage documentation and ensure safe handling of all hazardous waste and proper disposal of all volatile organic compound
  • Ensure proper labeling and documentation for hazardous waste containers
  • Prepare hazardous waste containers for transport and arrange transport to disposal facilities
  • Documents non-compliance with regulatory agencies and standards for review by compliance team, which include, but are not limited to, Water Resources, Air Quality, RCRA, SARA, EPA, OSHA, Public Health, Fire Marshall, CUPA, and local fire departments
  • Maintain SDS log books across all sites for all materials on hand
  • Ensure accessibility and accuracy of SDS for all relevant personnel
  • Provides training on applicable hazardous materials/hazardous waste regulations and guidelines
  • Promote a culture of safety and awareness regarding hazardous materials
  • Perform duties related to hazardous materials use, handling, retention, distribution, and disposal
  • Conduct site and facility inspections
  • Report findings of non-compliance and collaborate with teams on corrective actions
  • Collaborate with Compliance Department to propose corrective actions and follow-up on compliance issues
  • Conduct quarterly inventory counts of hazmat and PPE inventories at all locations
  • Manage PPE for all locations
  • Serve as a first responder to hazardous spills and other emergencies
  • Ability to be “On-Call” and to respond to a call-out within one (1) hour to the location

Specific Tasks

  • Run weekly “Soup Line” solvent distribution for a manufacturing facility
  • Replenish solvent stock/inventory
  • Manage PPE inventory for all sites
  • Maintain hazardous materials logs/inventory for compliance reporting purposes to SBCEHS, SBCAPCD, and DTSC
  • Schedule monthly or quarterly check ins with Compliance Department to support cross functional communication for reporting purposes

Order and submit Purchase Orders for the following

  • Hydrocarbons
  • Solvents
  • Dry Ice
  • CO2
  • LN2
  • PPE
  • Extraction materials

Oversee the calibration and certification of scales by coordinating with third-party vendors to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry standards

Maintain professionalism and live CCA’s core values of Respectful, Attentive, and Wholehearted at all times

Perform all other duties as assigned or inherent to the position

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of hazardous waste disposal procedures and best practices
  • HAZWOPER 40-Hour Certification
  • Strong organization and recordkeeping skills
  • Must have, or be willing to obtain, a hazardous waste management certification and/or additional certifications as required
  • Ability to perform risk assessments and develop emergency response plans
  • Proficient in using personal protective equipment and conducting safety audits
  • 5-7 years in leading manufacturing operations, including product, planning, quality assurance, maintenance, and regulatory compliance in the cannabis industry or related field
  • Strong understanding of mechanical and chemical of relevant manufacturing processes
  • Attention to detail to ensure compliance with regulations and proper handling of hazardous materials
  • Beginner/Intermediate/Expert user of Microsoft Office, Google’s G suite, Asana, MaintainX
  • Functional knowledge of California cannabis regulations
  • Must be 21 years of age (or older) at the time of hire
  • Proficiency of the English language, verbal and written format
  • Applicant must be able to successfully pass a background screening/live scan

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental safety, occupational safety and health, or related field required

The employee must frequently lift or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds, preferably utilizing partner lift. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Primarily in a light industrial and office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low; however, fluctuation of noise level may occur during peak production. The temperature in the work environment is usually moderate; however, fluctuation of temperature, either decreasing or increasing (heat level) is likely to occur during peak production.

Periodic weekend or evening work is expected.

Pay: $31.25 - $36.06 per hour
