CENTRAL COAST CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING (CCCIL)
CCCIL is consumer-controlled, community-based, cross-disability, nonresidential non profit agency. That provides independent Living core services to individuals with disabilities, regardless of age, income or disability type. This includes services to children and youth with disabilities. CCCIL was established in 1984 for the purposes of to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities of all ages and all disabilities living in the tri-county area (Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito) by providing independent living services and service coordination.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week) non-exempt, benefit eligible position. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Will work the majority of the time out of the Salinas main office and will occasionally travel to the satellite offices located in Santa Cruz, San Benito and King City counties. This position requires the availability to work occasional weekends and evenings.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Community Organizer (CO) is a full-time position working under the direct supervision of the Executive Director. The Community Organizer builds community capacity to advocate on issues of importance to people with disabilities. Facilitate trainings to individuals and groups on community organizing and advocacy on disability related issues. Responsible for involving CCCIL staff, consumers and Board members in advocacy issues.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * responsible for connecting an organization with the surrounding community. Brainstorming potential partnerships and methods for engagement with the local community members * Maintain a calendar for outreach events and work closely with community partners to plan and execute various outreach events.
- Planning and executing outreach events such as workshops, information sessions, webinars and community events.
- Develop local advocacy teams to increase community participation in advocacy on issues important to people with disabilities.
- Participate in bi-monthly statewide network briefing teleconferences and at least one statewide network committee.
- Travel throughout Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties to advocate with local communities to ensure equal access for persons with disabilities.
- Meet with CCCIL staff, consumers, local and state leaders in the tri-county area to identify key issues that require systemic change and develop an advocacy plan.
- Assist consumers in understanding and participating in providing local input to the local, state, and federal level processes.
- Provide required reports and evaluations to funding sources.
- Attend community forums, public hearings and will provide testimony on the needs for people with disabilities.
- Provide input to public and private officials regarding crucial issues through techniques such as letter writing campaigns and telephone alerts.
- Research and send out Alerts to staff, board members, community agencies and consumers educating them on the policies, and programs that affect people with disabilities.
EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s Degree in human services, communication or related field and significant experience with disability issues.
- OR: Two years working in a field of work which promotes independence for persons with a variety of disabilities and significant experience with disability issues. Volunteer experience accepted.
- Bilingual: English/Spanish
EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE PREFERRED:
- Personal experience with a disability
- Excellent written communication skills including the ability to prepare articles for publication.
- Familiarity with ADA issues regarding access, employment, etc.
- Computer literacy in word-processing and data base management using Microsoft Office.
WORK LOCATION
All services will be tailored to accommodate the needs of the consumer and will be provided in person, phone or video call.
