Summary:
Assist special needs children transported to and from school.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Inspect interior of bus; seats, seat belts, safety restraints, wheelchair tie-downs and wheelchair lift.
- Assist in transporting challenged children and/or children with behavior problems to and from school, as well as related activities.
- Know and follow the district, state, and federal rules, regulations, procedures and law as they relate to the operation of a school bus.
- Exercise student management through correct use of communication.
- Load and unload physically challenged passengers using safe and responsible procedures.
- Be familiar with each child's particular handicap and care.
- Be able to control the students while on the bus to ensure a minimum amount of distraction for the driver.
- Ensure that students requiring seat belts have their belts on at all times while on the bus.
- Be able to control an emergency in a proper manner.
- Assist in completing bus evacuation drills in accordance with local and state standards.
- Maintain all requirements to be a school bus assistant in the State of New Mexico.
- Attend all required in-service training and be able to comply with all contractual obligations.
- Attend MDT meetings as required.
- Know how to operate two-way radio correctly and according to company policy.
- Check for students and lost items after each route. Assist in keeping the bus clean and in order.
- Assist in maintaining, reading and understanding route sheets. Keeping all documents on the bus in order.
- Maintain good work habits and keep a presentable appearance which includes proper dress and good hygiene.
- Maintain a cooperative attitude and communicate with fellow employees, supervisors, parents, passengers and school personnel.
- Maintain a professional demeanor.
- Have a positive attitude and communicate with students, parents, teachers, co-workers and supervisors.
- Duties will require working until all students are home safely or returned to school if no parent/guardian is there to receive them.
- Accept other responsibilities and duties assigned by supervisor
- Support district and school efforts to keep CCSD safe and secure
- Complete and comply with all required trainings annually
- Adhere to NM Code of Ethical Responsibility of the Education Profession (NMAC 6.60.9.8)
- Other duties as assigned, reasonably related to the scope of the position
Minimum Qualifications:
- 18 years of age
- High School diploma or GED
- Pass Physical examination by licensed physician
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Dine language, culture, and history preferred
- Good communication skills and customer service skills
- Valid First Aid & CPR Certificate
Physical/Job Requirements:
Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying up to 50 pounds, climbing, bending, reaching, kneeling, driving a vehicle, traveling long distances, writing, typing, word processing, reading, researching information, and effective communication skills.
Safety and Health:
- Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions
- Completed and cleared background check
- Pass drug test if required for position
- Knowledge and compliance with district and school Safety Plans
Equipment/Material Handled:
- Multimedia equipment, including current technology

- Valid driver license and insurable by district if necessary
