The Overnight Camp Assistant Unit Director plays a key leadership role in ensuring a safe, structured, and engaging camp experience. This position is responsible for directly supervising a cabin of campers, coordinating daily activities, and stepping in as the lead when the Unit Director is unavailable. The Assistant Unit Director fosters a supportive, inclusive camp environment and actively participates in planning and executing camp programs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supervising and mentoring campers while facilitating daily activities and structured programs.
- Leading administrative duties when the Unit Director is not present.
- Ensuring camper safety and well-being, enforcing camp regulations, and responding to individual needs.
- Organizing and leading cabin and unit activities, including evening programs and devotionals.
- Assisting with waterfront activities as a lifeguard or lookout when assigned.
- Providing leadership to camp counselors and Leaders-in-Training (LITs) to enhance camper experiences.
- Participating in staff training, meetings, and camp-wide programs.
- Must be at least 19 years old and a college sophomore or equivalent.
- Prior experience supervising staff and working with children in an outdoor setting.
- Strong leadership, communication, and program-planning skills.
- Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, enforce safety protocols, and respond effectively to emergencies.
- Ability to live on-site for the duration of the camp season.
- Must possess the physical and visual capacity to supervise activities and respond to emergencies appropriately.
