SUMMARY
The job of School Police Officer (Act 44 Article XIII-C Section 1301-c) is a law officer employed by a school district whose responsibilities, including, working work hours that are established by the school district. The Police Officer is appointed by the Court of Common Pleas and is authorized by the court, to exercise the same powers as exercised under the authority of law or ordinance by the police of the municipality in which the school property is located and serve as such at any designated school as directed by the Superintendent and or Director of Safety and Security.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and Skills:
To be appointed, School Police Officers must meet minimum training standards as specified in Act 44 Article XIII-C under Section 1304-C Oath of Office, successfully completed training as set forth in 53PA.CS. CH.21 Subch. D (related to municipal police education and training) Act 120 certification or have graduated from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy and have been employed as a State Trooper with Pennsylvania State Police and separated from service in good standing. Must have good communication and organizational skills. Prefer that officers have completed the National Association of School Resource Officers basic course or must be able to complete the course within 12 months of hire.
Abilities:
Adhere to Pennsylvania laws relating to police powers. Adhere to Safety practices and procedures established by the School District. Ability to maintain and certify on weapons use/restrain procedures and use of force. Work closely with the school principal(s), meet at least once per week. Refer students and their families to the appropriate agencies for assistance when a need is determined. Must be available for conferences with students, parents, faculty to assist with matter of law enforcement and crime prevention. Abide by school board policies and consult with and coordinate activities with the Director of Safety and Security. Must maintain JNET access.
Education and Experience:
A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Police Officer with a preference of 2 years of school police or school resource experience. Community (specific) Policing can be considered as a substitute for school police experience. Officers who are appointed by the court as a School Police Officer will have to meet the Act 120 annual training requirements including firearms and taser qualification. Must maintain 16 hours of in-service training and maintain a current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification.
Certifications and Licenses:
Graduate from Municipal Police Officer Education and Training Commission’s Police Academy or the PA State Police. Weapons Qualification, Taser Qualification, CPR/First Aid Certificate, and NASRO basic course.
