Job Overview: The Construction Accountant is responsible for managing the financial operations of construction projects. This includes budgeting, cost tracking, and financial reporting. The role requires close coordination with project managers, vendors, and contractors to ensure accurate financial oversight, compliance with accounting principles, and timely reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Reporting and Analysis:
- Prepare and review financial statements for construction projects, including balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and cash flow reports.
- Monitor and analyze project costs to ensure they remain within budget.
- Provide detailed financial analysis to project managers and executives to support decision-making.
- Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Assist in the development of project budgets and forecasts.
- Track and update budgets based on actual expenses and projected costs.
- Ensure proper allocation of expenses related to construction materials, labor, and subcontractor payments.
- Cost Control and Compliance:
- Track project expenditures and ensure compliance with budget guidelines.
- Review and approve invoices and payments for vendors, subcontractors, and materials.
- Monitor job cost reports and flag discrepancies for review and corrective actions.
- Project Cost Tracking:
- Maintain job cost ledgers, ensuring accurate coding and allocation of project expenses.
- Collaborate with project managers to update and report on project progress.
- Reconcile job cost reports with general ledger and ensure accurate cost accruals.
- Contract Administration:
- Track change orders and ensure they are properly documented and reflected in financial reports.
- Cash Flow Management:
- Monitor cash flow to ensure timely payments to vendors and contractors.
- Prepare cash flow projections based on project schedules and expected billing milestones.
- Manage retention amounts and work with project teams to ensure timely collection of receivables.
- Audit and Tax Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and tax requirements.
- Prepare company financial reports for audits and provide necessary documentation for tax filings.
- Assist with the preparation of year-end financial reports and tax returns.
- Software and System Management:
- Utilize accounting software and project management tools (such as Red Team, and Quickbooks) to maintain accurate financial records and reports.
- Ensure all construction financial data is entered correctly into the system and kept up to date.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in construction accounting or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles and practices.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage 100 Contractor, RedTeam).
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines.
- Familiarity with cost accounting, job costing, and financial forecasting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA or other accounting certifications.
- Experience with tax compliance and auditing in the construction industry.
- Knowledge of construction contract terms and change order processes.
