Title: Mammogram Technician  
Reports to: CMO

Position Summary:  
The mammography tech is responsible for detecting breast tissue abnormalities by completing mammographic imaging studies, presenting them for diagnosis.

Qualifications:
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited Radiology school/program
  • Satisfactory completion of formal Radiologic technology training in an AMA-approved school and ability to meet requirements for registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT)
  • Technologists initially qualifying on or after April 28, 1999, must meet the Mammo-Specific requirements by having at least 40 hours of documented training in mammography and have performed a minimum of 25 mammography exams under direct supervision of an appropriate MQSA individual
  • Mammographic Radiologic Technology certified
  • 1 year of mammography experience
  • Active BLS

RESPONSIBILITIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:  may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Obtain proficient knowledge of CFHC’s programs’ philosophies, goals and objectives.  Comply with all policies and procedures as well as state and federal guidelines.
  • Understand the requirements of CFHC’s exposure control plan.  Utilize Universal Precautions.
  • Attend mammography staff meetings.
  • Verify informed consent for applicable procedures.
  • Greets patients by confirming patient identification; reviewing imaging request; checking for special instructions; confirming anticipated service with patients.
  • Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties; providing explanations of imaging procedures; explaining equipment; answering questions.
  • Conducts mammography study by positioning breasts; adjusting compression mechanisms; instructing patient to hold breath; retreating to lead protected area; adjusting equipment controls to set exposure factors; activating equipment to take image; releasing compression mechanisms; preparing for next positioning and view.
  • Minimizes radiation to patients and staff by practicing radiation protection techniques, per the As Low as Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) guidelines.
  • Maintains production and quality of mammograms by following established standards and procedures; developing mammograms; observing mammogram results; determining necessary adjustments for optimum results; retaking mammograms as required; forwarding completed studies to radiologist for interpretation.
  • Documents patient mammogram services by completing patient record charting.
  • Maintain mammography supplies in an orderly manner and in adequate quantity to ensure continuity of services, verifying receipt of supplies, and restocking as needed.
  • Exhibit enthusiasm, dependability, skills, versatility, and dedication in daily activities.
  • Attend continuing education activities as recommended by your supervisor.
  • Participate in quality improvement by making suggestions to enhance mammography services, efficiency, paperwork reduction, etc.
  • Demonstrate ability to work cooperatively with other members of the medical team. Be supportive of coworkers.
  • Communicate with patients in a compassionate manner, maintaining HIPPA compliance and obtaining 2 identifiers for patient identification according to JCAHO standards.
  • Ensures operation of mammography equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal and professional requirements, including maintaining CEU’s (12 general and 1 HIV/AIDS) and licensure.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols and administering first aid.
  • File and retrieve mammographic images as needed.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Keep a clean work area. Decontaminate work area daily and as needed.
  • Apply the principle of patient safety during all aspects of patient care.

  • Standing/walking/sitting for long periods
  • Independently mobile
  • Ability to lift weight equivalents to what would be required when (and if) asked to assist and position patients, reposition equipment and lift supplies.
  • Ability to adapt and function in varying environments of workload, patient acuity, worksites and work shifts.
