Title: Nurse Manager    
Reports to: Health Center Administrator (HCA)
FLSA Status: Exempt
Personnel Supervised: Clinical Support Staff (LPNs, CMAs)

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Nurse Manager is a leadership position with direct and indirect patient care responsibilities.  This position, working in collaboration with the Director of Nursing (DON) and the Health Center Administrator (HCA), is expected to develop systems of care that foster a successful clinical care team environment to ensure optimal outcomes for patients’ health.  The primary responsibility of this position is directing the daily clinical support staff activities towards the provision of safe, high quality, and efficient primary care to a patient population diverse in age, health status, and socio-economic level.  Secondary responsibilities include, providing direct nursing care to patients.  This position requires strong leadership and communication skills, nursing experience in directing primary care support staff, and an excellent knowledge base of family medicine primary care nursing including pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology.
 
 
MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Education:  Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Experience:  Must be a Registered Nurse with at least two (2) years’ experience or a Licensed Practical Nurse with at least three (3) years’ experience
  • Licensure:  Florida license
  • BLS certification
  • Computer literacy
 
RESPONSIBILTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Be familiar with CFHC’s program philosophies, goals and objectives.  Be cognizant of and comply with all CFHC’s policies and procedures, as well as state and federal regulations.
  2. Be competent in performing the duties of a nurse.
  3. Understand the requirements of CFHC’s Exposure Control Plan.  Personally utilize universal precautions when practicing in a clinical setting.
  4. Participate in staff outreach and off-site health care programs as requested by the DON, CMO, or CEO, represent CFHC in the community.
  5. Report as needed to DON any pertinent information or situations that impact on patient care or CFHC liability.
  6. Attend and participate in mandatory CFHC meetings (Center Specific meetings, Corporate meetings, and other meetings as designated by the DON, CMO, or CEO).
  7. Demonstrate ability to work cooperatively with other members of the clinical team.  Be supportive of coworkers.
  8. Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times.
  9. Carry out any other activities deemed appropriate by the DON, CMO, or CEO.
 
Primary Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Responsible for ensuring that the practice of nursing within CFHC is of the highest possible quality.  This will be accomplished in collaboration with the DON.
  2. Assign clinical and administrative duties to clinical support staff including, but not limited to, daily assignments of triage duties; cleaning and stocking of rooms; preparing, cleaning, and sterilizing instruments; inventory of medical supplies and medications to assure proper stock is available.
  3. Coordinate patient flow by troubleshooting scheduling difficulties, walk-ins, late patients, and emergencies. 
  4. Determine clinical support staffing requirements, including coverage for sick time, vacations, and other absences.
  5. Perform periodic assessments to determine deficiencies in clinical staff performance, which includes, but is not limited to:
  1. Log keeping (ex: hospital, temperature, medication/vaccine administration, OB intake).
  2. Skills (ex: vital signs, therapeutic injections, immunizations, sterile field/tray set-up, instrument sterilization, oxygen tank use and maintenance, emergency box use and maintenance, EKG)
  3. Policies and procedures (ex: universal precautions, consent forms, needle disposal, identification of proper disposal of expired medications, standing orders)
  1. Conduct periodic clinical support staff meetings in conjunction with the DON and HCA at the center.  The agenda and minutes are to be forwarded to the DON and HCA (Agenda and minutes are to be typewritten.)
  2. Evaluate the educational needs of the clinical support staff on a regular basis and provide regular clinic in-service educational programs in coordination with the DON.
  3. Conduct quarterly proficiency testing and annual evaluations of clinical support staff in collaboration with the DON.  This includes reviewing performance expectations, appropriate counseling in relation to performance, corrective discipline, formalized discussions of position descriptions and expected job tasks, and appropriate redirection and task correction as necessary.  Completed evaluations are to be sent to the DON and HR.
  4. Keep DON informed of all significant nursing issues including, but not limited to, any proposed policy or procedural changes, performance expectation breaches, evaluation deficiencies, disciplinary actions, problems with providers, etc.
  5. Review resumes and credentials of clinical support staff applicants and conduct interviews of those applicants in conjunction with the HR recruiter and DON.
  6. Coordinate orientation and training of new clinical support staff employees. 
  7. Perform monthly Nurse Manager Center Audits (EOC and safety inspections).
  8. Responsible for maintaining current credentials for clinical support staff on file with Human Resources.
  9. Coordinate nursing assignments for interning students.
  10. Carry out other duties as assigned by the DON or CMO.
 
Secondary Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: 
  1. Function as a professional nurse member of the health team, under the leadership of the DON. 
  2. Make nursing assessments related to the health status of the patient and triage them appropriately.
  3. Provide nursing coverage in clinic emergency shortage situations in conjunction with the DON and other Nurse Managers.
  4. Accurately function and perform all duties of nursing personnel as determined by the needs of the center, which includes, but is not limited to:  escorting patients to exam room and preparing them for the exam; taking and recording vital signs, patient histories, and other pertinent information; preparing patients for and assisting clinicians with procedures; administering immunizations and medications and monitoring patient response to these agents; providing professional patient education and counseling.
  5. Participate in all code situations.
  6. Serve as a mentor for interning students.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Subject to Change)
  1. Requires 80% or more time spent standing/walking
  2. Independently mobile
  3. Ability to lift weight equivalents to what would be required when occasionally assisting and positioning patients, repositioning equipment and lifting supplies
  4. Ability to adapt and function in varying environments of workload, patient acuity, worksites, and work shifts.
