What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fire Protection Engineer position at Central Florida Tourism Oversight District?
Position Summary:
Perform functions to serve as the department’s Fire Protection Engineer, Code and Document Coordinator, and enforce the EPCOT Building Code, for compliance with codes, state laws, and regulations, related to construction within the District, making decisions for which there is little precedent.
Essential Functions:
- Serve as technical expert for design and code issues related to occupant life safety, fire suppression systems, fire alarm systems, smoke management systems and passive fire protection features of building construction.
- Review engineering reports and performance based designs for fire protection systems, including review of fire modeling.
- Maintain and develop the EPCOT Building Codes. Update the adopted reference codes and standards for publication. Submit and incorporate code changes in accordance to appropriate methods.
- Prepare or assists in the preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports, and proposals. Prepare comprehensive reports and evaluate material testing data and submittals for the Manager, Department of Building and Safety.
- Review product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and related construction documents.
- Receive and review comments related to EPCOT building code compliance and assist the Manager of the Department of Building and Safety in code interpretations.
- Coordinate and participate in Annual Emergency Power Tests.
Other Duties:
- Perform or assist with any operations, as required to maintain workflow and to meet schedules and quality requirements.
- Participate in any variety of meetings and work groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specified level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, and policies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Competency:
- Demonstrable knowledge of engineering procedures.
- Broad knowledge of precedents and a good knowledge of principles and practices of related technical areas and construction practices of fire protection engineering.
- A current knowledge of industry or regulatory standards and design criteria pertinent to fire protection engineering.
- Thorough knowledge of fire protection engineering techniques, the design of fire protection _ systems, and engineering and design calculations. Broad knowledge of the application of fire protection engineering as applied to construction methods and materials.
- Current knowledge of computer applications to engineering and design. Working knowledge of engineering, planning, and control methods including computerized methods.
- Skilled in oral and written communication.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Fire and Building codes.
- Knowledge of fire modeling techniques.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Education/Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering and five to seven years in FPE or related position. In lieu of the college degree requirement, ten years of engineering experience, with at least five of those ten years responsible for Fire Protection Engineering work, may be substituted.
- NFPA Certification as a Fire Protection Specialist.
- Certification by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation as a Building Plans Examiner or ability to obtain this certification within one year from date of hire.
- Regular, dependable attendance required.

Driving Requirements:
Must possess a valid Florida State Driver's license and maintain eligibility under the District's commercial vehicle program.

While engaging in the duties of this position the Employee performs lifting and/or carrying of up to 50 lbs. occasionally and 25 lbs. frequently. Employee sits frequently. Employee stands occasionally and walks on varied surfaces frequently. Employee frequently bends/stoops/crouches, climb/balances. Employee occasionally pushes/pulls, kneels and crawls. Employee uses their hand(s)/arm(s) to reach in any direction and seize, grasp, hold and turn object using hand(s). Employee uses fingers, versus whole hand, to pick, pinch and feel objects. Employee sees, talk and hear as they communicate with others in person, electronically, by phone or radio. Visual functions include near and far acuity, the ability to identify and distinguish colors and requires adjustment of the lens of the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
Employee will operate motor vehicle(s) that involve the use of hand/foot controls.
Annual Emergency Power Test Inspections performed (a minimum of 15 times a year) require constant walking throughout entire shift.
