General Summary:

The teacher instructional assistant-EL (formerly ESL) supports and reinforces English as a Second Language acquisition and content area instruction provided by EL and mainstream teachers.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists EL and mainstream teachers in providing English language acquisition and content area instruction.
  2. Assists teaching basic survival skills to the most limited English proficient students.
  3. Regularly meets with EL and mainstream teachers to determine the academic needs of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students enrolled in their classes.
  4. Assists the EL teacher in informing the mainstream teachers about the linguistic and cultural backgrounds of the LEP students in their classes.
  5. Assists in providing input regarding appropriate curriculum modification for LEP students.
  6. Assists the district and the building assigned to identify, assess, place, teach and counsel each LEP student.
  7. Assists in organizing staff development training on English language instruction for learners of English as a Second Language and cultural awareness.
  8. Attends EL TIA and building staff, Individual Evaluation Plan (IEP) and Team Addressing Student Concerns (TASC) meetings as requested by the teacher or the EL Coordinator with prior approval. 
  9. Attends parent/teacher conferences as requested.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. Minimum education requirement is a high school diploma.  Previous college credit, WorkKeys certification or college degree preferred.  Some foreign language training and experience with diverse populations preferred.
  2. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students and school personnel.
  3. Previous experience working with children.
  4. Ability to care for, supervise, and nurture children.
  5. Ability to follow directions.
  6. Ability to work independently.
  7. Ability to assist with maintaining records of student progress.
  8. Excellent organizational skills.
  9. Ability to resolve conflict.
  10. Dependable, reliable, and protective of sensitive/confidential information. 

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  1. Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis. 
  2. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  3. Duties include frequent walking and physical activity, as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying. Must have the ability to move about the classroom/building and school property, including bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work-related tasks with and without students. 
  4. The ability to listen and effectively orally communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
  5. Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
  6. Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions. 
  7. Ability to work effectively and efficiently.

Environmental Conditions:

Incumbents work in indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures, including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes working around students, school equipment, and office equipment. 

 

Work Schedules:

Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the district’s school year calendar.

 

Background Checks:

The individual selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check. 

Salary : $16 - $20
