POSITION TITLE: Athletic Director

QUALIFICATIONS: Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Administration and Supervision License
REPORTS TO: Principal
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Develops, implements, and oversees the school's athletic programs in alignment with district goals and objectives and the Virginia High School League (VHSL) guidelines.
- Coordinates the scheduling of games, matches, and meets for all athletic teams, ensuring compliance with league rules and district policies.
- Organizes transportation, referees, officials, and other necessary personnel for athletic events.
- Collaborates with the school principal, assistant principals, coaches, and other staff to ensure the effective operation of the athletic program.
- Attends most sporting events to serve as the administrator on duty, acting as the principal's designee when necessary.
- Works closely with the booster club, community organizers, and stakeholders to promote and support athletic events and facility usage.
- Establishes and enforces expectations for student-athletes' conduct, academic performance, and sportsmanship.
- Develops and implements protocols for crowd control and event security, including coordinating with security services when necessary.
- Manages the athletic department's budget and accounts, working in collaboration with the school principal to ensure responsible financial oversight.
- Oversees the maintenance and inventory of athletic equipment, uniforms, and facilities.
- Supports the recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of coaching staff.
- Ensures compliance with VHSL regulations, including athlete eligibility, safety protocols, and participation requirements.
- Attend VHSL, Region 2A, and James River District meetings throughout the year.
- Communicates regularly with parents, students, coaches, and the broader community regarding athletic events, achievements, and policies.
- Encourages parental and community involvement in athletic programs to foster school spirit and support.
- Assists with other administrative duties within the school as assigned by the principal, working collaboratively with the administrative team.
- Create and maintain athletic handbook to include discipline procedures and guidelines.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Abide by state statutes, school board policies, and Title IX regulations.
- Attend meetings, workshops, and professional development sessions related to athletics and as requested by school administration.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation (including, but not limited to, athletic physicals for all athletes, permission forms, reports, etc.).
- Serve on committees as assigned.
- Remain current on best practices in athletic program management, student-athlete development, and event coordination.
- If needed, teach or provide coverage of a high-school course.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrated experience in scheduling, organizing, and managing athletic events.
- Prior leadership experience in school administration or athletic program management.
- Familiarity with VHSL rules and regulations.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with school administration, coaches, community members, and external partners.
