POSITION TITLE:  Athletic Trainer - Position supports Central & North High Schools (50% each)

 

POSITION INFORMATION:

Reports to: Building Principals

Hours to Work:  8.0 hours per day, 10-month (203 days) calendar schedule

Work Schedule/FLSA Status: Full-time / Exempt

 

Position Purpose: 

The athletic trainer coordinates, supervises and administers athletic training services under the direction of the team physician and in conjunction with the Athletics Director.  The athletic trainer provides services to prevent, assess and rehabilitate injuries to student athletes, acts as liaison between the school district and health care providers, and maintains accurate records pertinent to students’ participation in athletics, their injuries, and treatment programs.

 

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

Coordinate and supervise athletic training services under the direction of the school physician and in conjunction with the Athletics Director.

Be present at athletic events as assigned by the Athletics Director to administer immediate treatment at the time of an injury and supervise the delivery of treatment or rehabilitation programs prescribed by the athlete’s personal physician.

Train and supervise student trainers and approve athletes’ use of training equipment.

Assist coaches in the design of appropriate strength and conditioning programs for athletes.

Supervise the use of training facilities and maintain regular hours for their use from the first day of fall practice until the conclusion of the last state athletic event.

Maintain records regarding athletes’ health histories, prescribed medications, injuries and prescribed treatment plans, parental consent for treatment and emergency information.

Develop a work schedule with the Athletic Director (AD) to assure that services and facilities are available when needed

Manages various activities and tasks including:

  • Maintain training room hours as scheduled with the AD and supervise student-athletes’ use of training equipment
  • Maintain accurate records pertinent to student-athletes’ relevant medical histories, prescription medications, participation in athletics, injuries and treatment regimens, parental consent for treatment and emergency contact information
  • Assist the athletics director in developing, maintaining, and overseeing emergency medical services plans and school crisis plans related to school athletic events
  • Maintain adequate training and treatment-related supplies and equipment, under the supervision of the AD
  • Train and supervise student trainers, as necessary.

Prevents and treats injuries accordingly including:

  • Assist coaches in the design of strength and conditioning training programs as requested by the AD
  • Be present in training room or at district, conference or state athletic events, as assigned by the AD
  • Monitor conditions and practices to assure the safety of student-athletes and coaches, reporting concerns about unsafe conditions or practices to the AD
  • Provide prophylactic treatment/training for the prevention of injuries
  • Assess injuries at the time of occurrence to determine the appropriate course of action
  • Administer immediate and follow-up treatment of injuries not requiring medical care
  • Act as liaison for the school district, to parents and health care providers (physical therapists and physicians) when medical care is required
  • Provide rehabilitative treatment, as prescribed, when athletes are under medical care for injuries, and maintain accurate records of treatments provided.

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff as designated by the Superintendent.

 

Travel:  Travel between schools and for sporting events will be required.

 

Employee Punctuality and Appearance

  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree and current certification by the National Athletic Trainer Association.
  • Previous experience in athletic training and competitive athletics is preferred.
  • Ability to read and use information obtained from visual displays of written and quantitative information.
  • Ability to receive and process verbal information and to respond to non-verbal sounds.
  • Ability to detect job-related information based on sensory perception (touch, odor, color differentiation).
  • Ability to use uniform, controlled finger, hand, and arm movements.
  • Sufficient body mobility and stamina to walk, run, stand, bend, and kneel.
  • Ability to meet heavy lifting requirements of at least 75 pounds.
  • Skills required for performance of on-site assessments of athletes’ orthopedic, vision, and hearing status.
  • Knowledge of community resources and skills to assume liaison role with health-related agencies/care providers.
  • Ability and patience to work with students and parents.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Displays a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of OPS’s mission, purpose, goals and the role of every employee in achieving each of them.
