Description:

The Child Care Health Consultant will support early education, school-age programs and the childcare workforce by providing progressive quality professional development training, technical assistance, phone consultations and support through a continuous quality improvement effort to promote optimal health, safety and development in the childcare and school-age settings, based on National Health and Safety Standards. Services are provided both virtually and on-site. The Child Care Health Consultant will work both independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team of consultants statewide. The Child Care Health Consultant collaborates with, and provides linkage and referrals to DFD’s sponsored programs and initiatives, other approved agencies, organizations and health care professionals to improve the quality of care, promote the health and safety of children, families and the child care providers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following

  • Facilitates implementation of the statewide grant for the Child Care Health Consultants Program, meeting requirements of the Annex A.
  • Collaborates with the Health Consultant Team on planning and implementation of grant activities.
  • Provides phone consultation and technical assistance on health and safety related matters in childcare, utilizing recognized resources and following the national recommended best practice standards.
  • Provides assessment and evaluation of health and safety practices of childcare programs
  • Provides professional development training on best practice standards for health and safety topics such as: medication administration, nutrition and physical activity, preventing the spread of communicable diseases, personal care routines that includes sanitation, hand washing, diapering, and toileting, child safety, safe sleep policies and practices, oral health, special diets, inclusion and special needs, care plans, emergency management, immunizations and other trainings that will assist the health and safety needs of child care providers.
  • Assists child care programs in the development of policies and procedures on health and safety and provides guidance on maintaining health records.
  • Provides health and safety resources for parent and child health education programs when requested
  • Collaborates with DFD’s sponsored programs and initiatives, other approved agencies, organizations and health care professionals to improve the quality of care and promote the health and safety of children, families and their teachers.
  • Provides linkage and referrals to other community health services, social services, statewide programs and early childcare initiatives.
  • Participates in activities/events/conferences to promote quality childcare in the community, as well as statewide.
  • Tracks activities for reporting purposes.
  • Services are provided both virtually and on-site.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Working Conditions:

There are no unusual work conditions associated with this position. Noise level in the office is moderate. Professional/business attire is required. Employees are required to attend meetings/trainings at external locations and will therefore experience external weather conditions.

Requirements:

Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a Registered Nurse with experience in early care and education or school nursing or pediatric public health is required.

Experience: Experience and knowledge of pediatric health care and child development, American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) screening recommendations and immunizations schedules for children,

national health and safety standards for out-of-home childcare, indicators of quality early care and education; GNJK Standards, state childcare licensing requirements and public health principles, recognition and reporting requirements for child abuse and neglect/child maltreatment, state and local community resources. Experience in working with individuals at various educational levels, strong skills in cultural awareness, communication, and problem solving strongly preferred.

Must be self-initiated and able to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in order to meet the defined goals of the grant. This position requires flexibility to also work evening hours and on weekends.

Knowledge and experience relating to the field of non-profit, maternal child health and education is strongly preferred. Computer proficiency required with Microsoft programs including Windows, Outlook, Word. Strong interpersonal & oral/written communication skills required. Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.

Valid Driver’s license with the ability to provide proof of ongoing automobile insurance coverage is required. This position will entail reimbursable local and statewide travel utilizing personal vehicle in accordance to CJFHC policies.

Physical Requirements:

Employees are required to occasionally lift up to twenty pounds of materials or equipment.
