Paraeducator II

Position Description:

The Paraeducator II is responsible for working with certificated staff in providing assistance to students in classrooms or other learning environments as assigned. Position location is subject to transfer as program needs dictate. The Paraeducator II shall be evaluated periodically by the Building Principal/Supervisor pursuant to the currently established district procedures, evaluation criteria, and collective bargaining agreement. The process shall include an evaluation of the employee’s performance of the essential job functions as listed below.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Copy of high school diploma or equivalent – documentation required at time of application. College coursework in education or experience with children having learning or behavioral disabilities preferred

2. Official transcript with evidence of AA degree or higher or 48 semester or 72 quarter college-level credit hours or copy of ParaPro Assessment with score of 461 or higher - documentation required at time of application

3. Ability to stoop, crouch, crawl, bend, kneel, climb stairs, and stand for long periods of time

4. Ability to lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds

5. Completion of District-approved de-escalation strategies or able to obtain certification within 90 days for continuing employment

6. Valid CPR/1st Aid card or able to obtain within 90 days for continuing employment

7. Valid Food Worker card or able to obtain within 90 days for continuing employment

8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people in a multicultural and diverse socio-economic setting

9. Valid Washington State driver’s license

10. All Paraeducators will have to complete the State required trainings within the Paraeducator Board designated timelines. Central Kitsap School District will provide the guidelines and determine the trainings required for the Fundamental Course of Study Certificate. This qualification begins after officially hired.

Essential Job Functions:

This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:

1. Serve as an active, productive and collegial team member, who values, builds and maintains supportive relationships with students, staff, parents and community members

2. Maintain confidentiality

3. Assist students in one-to-one and small group settings to provide additional learning support including but not limited to social skills, vocabulary, writing, reading, library, math, social studies, natural and computer science

4. Work with students with mild to severe behavioral problems including students who may be physically and verbally aggressive

5. Ability to remain calm and use intervention strategies when student(s) are agitated including using appropriate physical interventions if necessary

6. Assist students in dealing with conflict, expressing themselves in appropriate ways and improving their behavior

7. Assist students with special needs, skills improvement, behavior techniques, and other activities

8. Assist students with gross and fine motor strengthening programs and activities

9. Assist students with making speech sounds; improving rhythm, fluency, and voice quality; and helping correct oral motor problems and cognitive communication impairments

10. Assist students with vision-related training which may include providing students with a description of the visual environment

11. Provide scribing for students

12. Assist students with wheelchair mobility, lifting, dressing, diapering, toileting, and feeding

13. Assist in recreational, playground, and/or physical activities (assist with swimming which includes getting in the pool)

14. Assist teacher in planning and adapting instructional materials and activities as directed

15. Coordinate activities and meet with teacher(s) on a regular basis

16. Administer tests and evaluate student progress in topical area and grade assignments and tests as directed

17. Assist teacher(s) in the maintenance of student records

18. Supervise and redirect students as necessary to maintain a safe environment ensuring that students do not injure themselves and others

19. Answer phones, maintain records, collect and distribute materials, inventory and order and process materials

20. Escort students to and from locations including student job sites and use of public transportation

21. Drive District vehicles including up to a nine-passenger van

22. Maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regular work hours

23. Professionally interact with students, staff and public

24. Manage and lead students through prescribed activities while promoting independence

25. Uphold and assist in enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and board policy
26. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities

27. Requires the use of multiple communication and technology systems, which may include electronic mail, computers, document cameras, smart boards and web-based resources

28. Perform related duties as assigned

7. Knowledge of basic subject areas, such as spelling, writing, reading, math, and science

8. Knowledge of safety rules, regulations and procedures

9. Knowledge of learning and instructional strategies appropriate to assigned grade levels and individual students

10. Knowledge of child development concepts, developmentally appropriate curriculum and individualized learning processes for children, indicators of child abuse and neglect, and factors affecting low-income families

11. Knowledge of physical or occupational disabilities, speech/language development, and/or vision instruction if applicable

12. Skills in written and oral communications

13. Skills in learning and interpreting assignments, procedures, rules and regulations

14. Skills in encouraging and tutoring students

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.77 - $30.60 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 32.50 per week
