Job Summary

To serve as a leader who defines, communicates, motivates, and collaborates with staff to implement the academic vision of the organization. This position is an ideal opportunity to play a transformative role for the Accomack County Public Schools by supporting and driving performance through a variety of metrics reflecting academic success and school culture. The Assistant Superintendent of Instruction works closely with the Superintendent and the Senior Leadership Team in the planning and execution of the Accomack County Public Schools’ mission, vision, and goals.

Essential Duties

  1. Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction will lead such academic strategic initiatives as:
    1. Ensure equitable gains for all
    2. Ensure that educational programs strive to meet the needs of the whole
    3. Improve student
    4. Ensure that students demonstrate college and career readiness upon
    5. Ensure that all students are prepared and will receive rigorous and appropriate
  2. Provides leadership and coordination to involve all constituent groups, teachers, principals, other staff, parents and the community, in the on-going process of educational reform, curriculum planning and implementation, curriculum and instruction, and program development.
  3. The Assistant Superintendent of Instruction is responsible for the oversight of:
    1. Special Populations Department
    2. Accountability and Assessment
    3. Federal Programs and Schools Improvement
    4. Curriculum and Instruction
    5. Career and Technology Education
  4. Integrates the services of regular education, bilingual education, special education, alternative education and categorical programs to ensure continuity of learning in order to meet the educational needs of all children. Supervises the operation and integration of categorical educational programs.
  5. Builds consensus among parents, community, and staff relative to the District’s goal of academic achievement, academic agenda and instructional roadmap.
  6. Monitors education research, trends, and developments to support school improvement efforts and program
  7. Directs the on-going evaluation of educational initiatives pre-kindergarten to grade twelve, making recommendations for improvement, and providing leadership in implementing those improvements.
  8. Provides a system-wide staff development plan to enhance the implementation of the District’s educational and supportive service agenda.
  9. Provides leadership and coordination to the Department of Instruction in the provision of educational support to schools. Works closely with school administrators to develop and implement new initiatives to most effectively meet the need of children and school communities. Coordinates school operations with other district departments and offices.
  1. Provides leadership and coordination in securing and overseeing grants from foundation, federal, state, and local
  2. Serves as a member of the Superintendent’s leadership team, working to define problems, collect and monitor data, and make recommendations to address issues.
  3. Develops and maintains current knowledge of school operations and programs, existing laws, and administrative directives to ensure that schools are organized and administrated in a manner which promotes student learning and accomplishes goals of the District.
  4. Keeps abreast of research in education, utilizing this information in the development of programs, preparing Board items, and in advising the superintendent on policy and legislative matters.
  5. Establishes and maintains effective relationships with local, community, and civic groups and organizations, municipal, state and national agencies, and other interested parties with respect to interpreting and articulating the District’s academic programs, school administration and related matters.
  6. Provides leadership and coordinates the preparation of annual budgets for the Instruction Recommends candidates for hiring/non-renewal and evaluates performance of staff.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctorate preferred
  • Master’s degree in educational administration or Curriculum from an accredited college/university
  • Virginia State Level I Administration and Supervision PK-12 endorsement or ability to acquire licensure within time of hire. Division Superintendent Endorsement is desirable.
  • Five (5) years of successful experiences as an administrator at the district and school level in a comparable school district setting preferred.

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and enter data into a computer; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
