Position Purpose/Summary: Responsible for the application of journeyman skills and knowledge in cutting, smoothing, polishing, and setting glass in municipal buildings and equipment. Replacement of all modern forms of glass including tempered insulated units following breakage is the primary day to day function. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with standard trade practices with review through inspection during process and upon completion.  Work instructions may be oral or written via computerized work management system and are accompanied by sketches if necessary.  No supervision is ordinarily exercised over other employees.

Essential Functions:

  • Works from prints, drawings, specifications, schedules, written and verbal orders and instructions.  Installs, assembles, repairs and maintains glazing components.
  • Cuts, smooths, polishes, sets glass, performs glazing work of any character, in connection with municipal buildings, equipment and furniture.
  • Receives work instructions and specifications.  Prepares necessary sketches and patterns.
  • Cuts various kinds and thicknesses of glass to specific sizes and shapes.  Marks out and cuts stock glass with glass cutting tool.  Breaks away excess glass by hand or notched tool.
  • Examines glass after cutting for chips, scratches, rough spots, or other flaws or defects. Repairs, smooths, polishes, bevels glass using mastic cement and metal strips.
  • Glazes wood furniture, small windows, and office partitions using glazier points and moldings.  Glazes metal furniture using rubber cushions, glazing strips, and screws. Installs mirrors using wooden blocks, plastic sleeves, and cardboard and wooden backings.
  • May attach hinges, catches, and similar hardware. Changes ropes, chains, and weights in windows.  Re-putties old sashes.
  • Rigs, stages and erects scaffolding as required.  Cleans tools, equipment and work area.
  • Performs painting duties during periods when glazing work is not required.
  • Performs other duties involved in general and preventative maintenance and repair work such as but not limited to:  inspecting and adjusting storm windows, patching and caulking as required.
  • Detects and reports defective and unsafe equipment/material as well as unusual situations to supervisor.  Observe and obey all safety rules, practices and procedures.  Wear and employ all required safety equipment and devices.  Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Completes work orders and updates Munis with labor/ status of all work.
  • Performs related work as required.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, equipment, processes and techniques of the glazing trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Working knowledge of applicable sections of the municipal building code.
  • Ability to work from written and oral instructions, sketches, and drawings.
  • Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and materials in cutting, smoothing and polishing glass.
  • Must be willing to coordinate and work with all other trades as needed. 

 

Education and Experience: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of a formal apprenticeship in the glazing trade.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience as a journeyman glazier.

Special Necessary Qualifications:  None

 

Technology, Equipment, Systems, and Tools:  Requires basic computer skills and knowledge of typical craftsmen equipment.

 

Working Conditions:  Work is mostly performed in a field environment.  Regular and punctual attendance is a requirement.

Physical Requirements and Potential Hazards:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear; reach with hands and arms; lift and carry.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
