POSITION: ATHLETIC TRAINER AND STUDENT HEALTH SPECIALIST
POSITION SUMMARY: To assume the responsibility and obligation of establishing and maintaining a high quality athletic training program/student health specialist for all Trigg County School Students/Sports
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Four year – Bachelor Degree
- Two years’ experience as a high school athletic trainer or similar related work and training.
- Valid Kentucky Driver’s License with a safe driving record.
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications.
- Kentucky Athletic Trainer Certification
- National Athletic Trainers Association Certification is desired.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent or designee.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Advise athletes on the proper use of equipment.
- Assess and report the progress of recovering athletes to coaches and physicians.
- Provide support and guidance for students interested in entering athletic training programs at different institutions.
- Conduct an initial assessment of an athlete's illness or injury in order to provide emergency or determine whether an athlete should be referred to physician(s) for definitive diagnosis and treatment.
- Apply preventative adhesive taping.
- Provide basic First Aid supplies to control bleeding, perform CPR, and provide basic splinting for fracture/dislocation immobilization to injured athletes and coaches as events happen.
- Attends team practices and contests, as deemed necessary.
- Maintain a professional, organized, sanitary training facility.
- Follow physicians’ orders to implement comprehensive rehabilitation program(s) for athletic injuries.
- Confer with coaches in order to select protective equipment.
- Inspect playing fields/areas in order to locate any items that could injure players and make sure cleanliness and disinfection of equipment is in place.
- Plan and implement comprehensive athletic injury and illness prevention programs.
- Maintain and monitor the yearly physical forms and consent forms.
- May arrange for physical exams at the site.
- Participate in the development of the after school hours Emergency Plan Response for schools/district.
- Consult with site coaches on athletic injury prevention, basic first aid, and follow-up injury treatment and rehabilitation.
- Inventory, budget, and help order supplies with the cooperation of the Athletic Department budgets.
- Keep daily log of treatments provided to athletes.
- Keep records of injury evaluations and First Aid provided to an athlete.
- Discuss with athletes’ parents/guardians their child’s injury as a result of participation in Athletic Program activities.
- Initiate Emergency Medical System (EMS) by contacting 911 or directing someone to do so when deemed necessary.
- Provide First Aid and emergency care to the visiting team athletes if notified to do so by game officials, site officials or the visiting team coach.
- Provide advice to athletes, coaches, and parents to the care and prevention of athletic injuries, recommended protection, and safety ideals to an injury.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Perform basic first aid procedures and screen ill or injured children according to established procedures; utilized a variety of health products and supplies in caring for injuries and health needs.
- Administer first aid in emergency situations and notify nurse, administrator, parents or paramedics as necessary.
- Schedule students for and assist with vision, hearing, scoliosis and dental screenings; schedule follow up appointments if further testing are required.
- Prepare, maintain and type a variety of health-related records and files including student health records, emergency medical records, accident reports and health and disability reports; prepare correspondence, forms, notices and referrals; maintain files and duplicate materials as needed.
- Maintain the health office in a clean, orderly and safe condition; assist in maintaining inventory and order first aid supplies as necessary.
- Attend meetings and assist other school personnel as required.
- Ability to administer first aid to ill or injured students.
Knowledge of:
Basic First Aid and age-appropriate CPR techniques.
Health and safety regulations.
Record-keeping techniques.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
240-day contract with salary determined by the adopted salary schedules of
Trigg County Board of Education.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of school personnel.
