Surgical Technologist
Job Summary
Performs specified functions to meet the requirements of each procedure approved for the Facility.
Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedures according to physician’s preference cards. Inspects equipment and instrumentation for proper working condition.
Performs functions following principles of aseptic technique and prescribed operating room procedures.
Adheres to aseptic technique when opening sterile packages and preparing for the procedure. Arranges instruments according to routine for given procedure; confirms that instruments work properly. Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays. Reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and acts according to policy.
Qualifications
Operating room technician training required (Surgical technician course or Facility staff development program for operating room technicians)
Operating room experience required, general urology experience required, robotic experience preferred.
MENTAL DEMANDS
Require frequent and constant judgment and response; occasionally in response to disasters or emergencies, actual events or drills. Require language skills adequate for high-level verbal and written communication in American English.
OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE
Category I exposure to bloodborne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards.
Essential Functions And Objectives

Reports observed or suspected safety violations, hazards, and policy and procedure noncompliance to the Safety Coordinator or other designated person. Observes safety measures in performance of job duties and responsibilities. Responds to emergency situations with competence and composure. Reports observed or suspected medical emergencies, notifies appropriate personnel, and responds appropriately. Identifies facility emergency situations (e.g. fire/disaster) and notifies appropriate personnel and external agencies.
Correctly utilizes, cares for, cleans instruments, supplies and equipment as directed.
Handles equipment and instruments correctly to provide appropriate availability and safety. Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure. Assists in work area by cleaning, storing, packaging and sterilizing instruments. Assists in storing and stocking of supplies as directed. Maintains and updates surgeons' preference cards.
Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physician.
Displays the ability to comprehend and interpret verbal orders and direction. Displays skill in oral and written communication techniques. Documents patient care records and other forms accurately following policies and procedures. Accurately advises others responsible for care of the patient about the patient's status.
Adheres to the sterilization process policies and procedures.
Cleans each item according to manufacturers' instruction. Inspects instruments under microscope for damage and defects; lubricates items as required. Determines that each item is in good working condition, repairs instruments within capabilities. Sorts and arranges items into proper trays according to established policy and procedure. Wraps trays and individual items according to established policy and procedure. Accurately labels each item with name and Julian date.
Correctly operates sterilizers, ultrasonic washer and other equipment for processing items.
Positions items correctly in sterilizer and selects proper cycle; seeks assistance when needed. Checks indicators for proper functioning. Performs required biological monitoring tests on all sterilizers according to established policy and procedures. Maintains availability of supplies for continuity of recording throughout sterilization process. Cleans sterilizers according to established policies and procedures.
Checks package integrity of wrapped sterilized items; replaces items as necessary. Places items in correct location. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies for the sterile processing area. Maintains accurate record of biological testing.
Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide appropriate care for patients.
Other duties as assigned.
Education / Licensure / Experience: * Minimum 3 years of surgical experience and/or materials management
Must maintain: * Hepatitis immunization

Education / Licensure / Experience: * Minimum 3 years of surgical experience and/or materials management
- Proficient with informational technology applications (eg. Microsoft Word); experience with electronic medical record and/or electronic supply management system preferred
- Certified Surgical Technologist preferred; AST membership encouraged
- Experience in urology and robotics surgery preferred
- Experience in ambulatory surgical and/or procedural environment preferred
Must maintain: * Hepatitis immunization
- Evidence of negative Mantoux or chest x-ray.
- Proof of immunization against rubella and measles, COVID-19.
- Pre employment physical and Annual health assessment
- Able to maintain extensive standing, moderated sitting, and the transfer of patients weighing less then 350lbs.
- Able to perform CPR
- Able to lift 50#
