Primary Purpose
The Part-Time Instructor provides instruction to students in the Dental Assisting program, directs student discussion and evaluates student performance in the classroom.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction in area of discipline, using approved course outcome guides. Teaching assignments may be during the day (including early morning), evening, or weekend, and could include classes taught at any of the College campuses, online or remotely.
  • Hold at least one scheduled office hour per class per week for student help sessions and program assistance.
  • Utilize College tools and resources, including the Learning Management System and Disability Services software, to support teaching activities as appropriate.
  • Participate in course assessment.
  • Perform other essential job functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Department Specific
  • Provide instruction, guidance and assessment in the lab and possibly clinic settings within the Dental Assisting Program. This position will include didactic instruction, in the classroom and/or online. Courses that may be taught include, but are not limited to, Infection Control, Basic and Advanced Dental Assisting, Dental Materials, Preventive Dentistry, Dental Science, Oral Medicine and Dental Radiology. Part time instruction requires approximately 25 contact hours per month. This a cohort program with up to 24 students enrolled in the Dental Assisting Program beginning each Fall Term.
  • May be asked to assist and direct students in the onsite Dental Clinic. In partnership with Deschutes County Health Services, COCC offers an on-site Dental Clinic. This clinic is held in the COCC Dental Lab/Clinic and is offered 10-13 Fridays per academic year. Responsibilities may include ordering and maintaining supplies, including routinely checking expiration dates and restocking operatories. Proper maintenance of instruments and equipment, including weekly sterilizer testing, operatory waterline maintenance and documentation of these being done. Duties also may include scheduling patients and supervising student dental assistants during patient care.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.
  • Thorough knowledge in the field of General Dental Assisting and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
  • Ability to adapt and use a variety of teaching and assessment techniques including the use of technology to enhance student success.
  • Ability to observe, direct, and oversee students ensuring safety in the classroom or laboratory.
  • Ability to work with and present various curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office suite: various course management systems; technology to teach traditional, hybrid, or online courses; and other technology used in the instruction setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members.
  • Ability to provide services to students in a manner which does not discriminate as to race, creed, religion, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, sexual preference or marital status.
  • Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.
  • Ability to work with faculty and other COCC staffs at all levels.
  • Willingness to travel and or teach at various hours and campus locations, as required.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative atmosphere among students and the willingness to work as a member of a team with faculty.
  • Excellent oral, written and electronic communication skills.

Ergonomic Requirements
Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Persons in this position may be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials. All employees who have been identified as having the potential for this exposure will be offered the hepatitis B vaccination at no cost. The employee has the right to waive these inoculations by signing a declination form. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without a significant risk of injury, or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or the ability to earn one within three years of hire.
  • Three to five years of general dental assisting experience.
  • Demonstrated successful teaching, or evidence for the potential for excellence in teaching.
Required Certifications:
  • Current CDA (Certified Dental Assistant) certification from DANB (Dental Assisting National Board)
  • Current Oregon Board of Dentistry Radiology Certification
  • Current Oregon Board of Dentistry EFDA (Expanded Functions Dental Assistant) certification.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate from an accredited Dental Assisting program
  • Teaching aspects of dental assisting in a DA Program or dental office.
  • Current CPR certification
  • Current Immunizations as required by the Dental Assisting Program.
