Title: Mental Health Medical Assistant
Description: The role of the medical assistant is to assist providers in implementing patient care and provide patient-centered and culturally competent care at Central Outreach Wellness Center.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Obtain Vitals including height, weight, BP, pulse, and respiratory rate.
- Obtain Labs as ordered, and properly label samples with first initial, last name and birthdate as confirmed with patient.
- Collect samples including urine.
- Administer and properly chart for injections under the guidance of providers, and bill for patient injections in EMR system properly.
- Properly chart any given medications in the chief complaint with proper dosage, concentration, administration route, site, lot number, and expiration date
- Assist providers with any medical task as requested.
- Disinfect exam rooms and common areas between patient visits.
- Stock all bathrooms and exam rooms with gloves, appointment slips, etc.
- Properly dispose of sharps and bio-hazardous materials, maintain safe environment
- Answering phones and routing the caller to where they need to go.
- Call patients who no-show to reschedule appointments.
- Triage patient phone calls, assess needs and connect to appropriate provider.
- Track treatment plans and due dates
- Facilitate and keep track of referrals to external providers.
- Document all patient encounters in EMR in a timely manner
- Check-in calls if requested by patient or provider.
- Keep track of samples and injectable medications
- Keep injection tracker up to date for injectable medications.
- Schedule follow up appointments for injections at appropriate intervals as determined by psychiatrist.
- Dispose of expired medications appropriately
- Answer phones and return calls.
- Maintain encounter form logs.
- Covey messages to/from physician and therapists to patient
- Assist care coordinator with any duties he/she/they may need.
- Call to confirm appointments the week before
- Assist in scheduling/re-scheduling patient appointments.
- Send appropriate MH screening questionnaires ahead of appointments and print them out for provider.
Additional Items:
- Maintain appropriate boundaries between personal and professional patient relationships.
- Should be aware the Medical Assistant is one of the first impressions to each patient.
- Need to make sure each patient is comfortable with their care.
- Need to be culturally competent while working, including being gender sensitive and pronoun aware.
- Completely understand the healthcare privacy laws as outlined in HIPAA.
- Be able to work with a team of medical assistants, providers, and administrative staff.
- Understand the employee handbook and follow the rules outlined in it.
- Maintain a professional attitude and demeanor.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills, Excel, Word, and how to use the EMR.
- Experience with patient centered care
