General Function

Under the general direction of the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) school director, the qualified assistant (QA) will assist in the planning, developing, coordinating and delivery of Commissioned-mandated training courses. QA will support the school director with the day-to-day operations of the BLET program, as well as the day-to-day supervision of the students and instructors. QA will provide administrative and logistical assistance and oversee the program in the absence of the school director.

Duties and Responsibilities

I.BLET School Administrative Duties
  • Can establish and maintain relationships with local and state law enforcement agencies by partnering with agency administration i.e., police chief, coordinators, and recruiters.
  • Must be able to obtain, organize and analyze data to plan and organize the BLET schedule.
  • Coordinate with local agencies to schedule components for BLET candidates such as driving track, firearms and other course topics as needed.
  • Coordinate BLET academy schedules with instructors and cadets.
  • Maintain all instructors and files to ensure BLET instructors are following North Carolina Justice Academy requirements.
  • Notify instructors in a timely manner if their instructor certifications are expiring.
  • Update and review lesson plans and training aids prior to the start of each BLET class.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies for the BLET school/s, transport equipment and supplies as need to
  • Visit offsite location for instruction purposes, maintain BLET school budget to include equipment, supplies and instructor salaries.
  • Work with internal procurement partners to purchase any items necessary for the operation of a BLET program.

II.Student Support
a.Conduct preliminary interview for prospective BLET cadets and coordinate and facilitate BLET information sessions.
b.Maintain all cadet training records required for North Carolina Justice Academy (NCJA) Accreditation as well as student matriculation through the BLET program; including administration of test, grades, and attendance.
c.Attend cadet progress counseling sessions and record/document these proceedings.
d.Serve as a liaison between other program areas of the college to support student success. This would include connecting students with college resources such as Navigators, Advisors, Financial Aid, Single Stop, Tutoring and Counseling Services and other resources as needed.
e.Assist with program marketing and recruitment efforts.

III.Other Administrative Duties
  • Responds to inquiries and requests involving some use of independent judgment to fit situations and facts with established guidelines; serves as informational resource to staff.
  • Creates and updates unit's files; pulls and re-files records; purges inactive files.
  • Maintain unit's computerized databases, updating and purging records as needed.
  • Monitor inventory and supplies and fill out orders as needed.
  • Answers phone: provides information and explains procedures; refers call to appropriate person; takes messages; screens requests for supervisor.
  • Research inquiries by contacting appropriate person for further information; may contact questioner to provide answer.
  • Selects and mails form letters, brochures, and other prepared correspondence.
  • Type and proofread memos, correspondence, and other printed material.
  • Gather and summarize information; may produce reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements and Preferred Qualifications

  • Requires High School diploma or GED,
  • Have four years of experience as a criminal justice officer or as an administrator or specialist in a field directly related to the criminal justice system.
  • Must be able to obtain a Qualified Assistant Certification from the North Carolina Justice Academy.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Have an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in criminology or Criminal Justice.
  • Completed an orientation course conducted by Standards Division staff and participate in annual training conducted by North Carolina Commissioned staff.
  • Be proficient in Google suite as well as Microsoft Office 360.

Working Conditions:
Typical office environment; frequently sitting at a desk or workstation using a computer display, keyboard,
mouse and telephone; frequent interactions with students, faculty, staff, and/or the public; infrequently lifting
and carrying items up to 10 lbs.; infrequently bending or twisting at the waist and reaching overhead. Infrequently traveling between buildings on campus.
