Purpose and Overview
Central Presbyterian Church, in Towson, MD, is a Christ-centered community of about 400 members, comprising all ages and faith stages, focused on our mission of “moving people toward Christ by being a community of faith which loves, encourages and equips people in Christ, sending them out to serve.” Located in a thriving area, Central is poised for impact and outreach in our community and beyond. While we embrace our Presbyterian identity, Central encompasses believers from a variety of backgrounds, and remains anchored in the historic tenets of orthodox Christian belief.
This position promotes key elements of the mission of Central: moving our community toward Christ, forming the body, and equipping the church in discipleship, evangelism and service. We seek a Director of Community, Formation and Mission who embraces the gospel of Jesus Christ, who has a love for God's people and who brings prayerful intentionality to the process of planning and leading others in discipleship and service.
Purpose of the Position: This position seeks to creatively envision, implement and integrate Central’s efforts in three related areas: , , and (both locally and globally). Because these areas are inherently interconnected, there will be overlap in the development of robust programs for each of these strategic efforts. Central is blessed with many capable lay servants and is always seeking to develop more, so this position will focus on coordinating teams and inviting/equipping lay involvement in all areas.
Accountability
- Full-time position (salary range $60,000-$70,000), with benefits package
- Position reports directly to the Senior Pastor and Session.
- Supervises the Missions Coordinator and Database Manager
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Oversee Welcome & Community Life
- Recruit, equip and schedule Sunday Welcome Teams
- Coordinate with database manager, Scout Team and Worship Team to ensure warm & timely follow-up with visitors.
- Plan and publicize regular membership opportunities & facilitate “next step” community integration.
- With support from staff, elders and lay volunteers, develop and oversee congregational strategy for community life, including:
- Yearly calendar of all-church events, mid-sized group opportunities, and smaller gatherings.
- Roster and promotion of small groups and other relationally-focused groupings (mentorships, men’s & women’s groups, etc.)
- Recruitment, development and equipping of new small group leaders, mentors and other community facilitators.
- Integrated efforts to build community across Central’s programming including worship, service, modification of gathering spaces, etc.
- Identifying areas of need and unreached populations within the church and implementing strategies for connection and service.
2. Oversee Discipleship & Spiritual Formation
- In conversation with pastoral staff & session, develop a vision for holistic discipleship across all ages and stages (young adults through senior adults).
- Oversee, in partnership with pastoral staff & discipleship team, implementation of this vision, including:
- Opportunities for learning, scriptural and intellectual growth (i.e. Adult Christian Education, special series, targeted learning opportunities).
- Opportunities for prayer & development of spiritual disciplines (retreat days, resources & seasonal initiatives, experiential learning, etc.)
- Regular opportunities for ministry & outreach beyond the church walls: equipping for evangelism, hands-on service, community engagement, “neighboring.”
3. Oversee Mission & Outreach
- Staff lead for Outreach Leadership Team: in collaboration with Mission Coordinator & OLT chairperson, facilitate vision & implementation of Central’s global mission engagement and support.
- In collaboration with Mission Coordinator & Local Outreach Team, develop vision for Central’s neighborhood & community outreach efforts, including:
i. Support & collaboration with local ministry partners
ii. Calendar of hands-on service opportunities for all ages
iii. Discernment and development of strategic local & community initiatives
iv. Cultivation of collaborative partnerships with other local congregations.
4. Staff Supervision
- Direct supervision of Mission Coordinator and Database Specialist.
5. Speaking, Teaching and Preaching
- Regular teaching and preaching, at events and/or worship, depending on experience and availability.
Required Skills
- Has a clear understanding of the vision and mission of Central and faith formation.
- Agreement with and adherence to Central’s Mission Statement and ministry policies.
- Experience with Bible study and ability to develop & train small group leaders.
- Ability to create a welcoming environment.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills to create, motivate and encourage ministry leaders and teams.
- Demonstrates professional and relational communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Relates to people from all backgrounds. Works collaboratively with all ministry staff and volunteers.
- Ability to manage a budget and control costs.
- Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
Minimum Qualifications
- Relevant ministry background and experience; experience building disciples
- Bachelor’s degree and theological/Biblical training preferred.
