Overview
The Special Education Nurse-Instruction plays a crucial role in supporting students with diverse learning needs within the educational environment. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about fostering an inclusive atmosphere and enhancing the academic experience for students with disabilities. The nurse will collaborate with teachers, parents, and support staff to implement individualized health plans (IHPs) and ensure that all students receive the necessary resources and support to thrive.

Qualifications

1. Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Nursing

2. Current licensure in the State of Iowa by the Board of Nursing

3. A minimum of two years' experience in Public Health Nursing including service to schools or as a school nurse OR completing of six hours of special education courses within one year of receiving temporary authorization. Candidates with 10 or more years of nursing experience may be considered based on relevant experience and qualifications.

4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development of the Agency health services program which may include environmental health and safety, emergency health procedures and responsibilities, health promotion, communicable disease prevention and control, acute or chronic health problems, health assessment and screening, and record keeping and program evaluation.
  • Assessment of Special Education students, which may include but is not limited to: Health Screening; obtaining health histories and current health data and interpreting to appropriate staff members; physical assessment
  • Develop the written individual health plan (IHP) for special health services with the educational team
  • Monitor and coordinate the procedures for medication administration and special health services
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all student health and education records in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA, ensuring secure data handling through proper storage, proper destruction of educational records, and adherence to established privacy policies
  • Train special education staff to monitor students’ medical treatments and communicate the educational goals to physicians or external providers
  • Assist the student’s family in identifying their individual health needs and environmental concerns and in exploring possible alternative solutions. Referral to appropriate professional and community resources; wellness promotion; supportive counseling
  • Work cooperatively with other personnel in special education programs and services to promote a coordinated child-centered approach to the problems of the student with a disability.
  • Complete and submit reports including Medicaid reimbursements, required by the AEA according to the Federal and State Law and AEA guidelines and those requested by the Director or Supervisor
  • Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for making programming decisions through a problem-solving process.
  • Collaborate with agencies and individuals within and outside of the community to facilitate continuity of services for students with special health care needs.
  • Participate as a member of the multi-disciplinary team and identify IEP health plan components
  • Review, interpret and update health information from a variety of sources on eligible students identified with health needs.
  • Develop various health-related forms and evaluation tools.
  • Review, interpret and update health information from a variety of sources on students identified with food allergies and report to appropriate staff in contact with child.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.

  • Knowledge of Iowa IDEA and Iowa Medicaid
  • Knowledge of technology as it relates to education
  • Maintain confidentiality related to agency, district, students, and family information.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and respect for diversity

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $47,424.00 - $71,006.04 per year
