Central State Bank is hiring for the following positions:
- Universal Banker – Ames branch
- Universal Banker - West Des Moines branch
As a Universal Banker, this engaging, detail-oriented person will provide our customers with a full range of banking services from basic teller transactions to opening accounts and advising customers of solutions that fit their needs.
This role is a perfect next step for tellers with one to two years of banking experience under their belt, OR as an entry point into banking for those working in related financial services.
This is an onsite, customer-facing position at either our Ames branch or West Des Moines branch.

Here’s what a typical workday as a Universal Banker looks like:
- Be the face of our bank! As the first point of contact for customers, provide a positive customer experience that knocks their socks off! Greet our customers in a courteous manner and provide prompt and efficient service with a high degree of accuracy.
- Do the daily work. Perform basic teller transactions and offer a variety of services and products such as CDs, IRAs, debit cards, ACH, wires, cashier’s checks and money orders.
- Help with opening and closing procedures for the branch, reconcile and balance teller drawer and vault, process mail drops and night depositories, and answer questions about customer accounts by phone or in person.
- Be a super-sleuth and a problem-solver! Investigate discrepancies and make corrections as needed.
- Promote our bank and help it grow! Recognize referral opportunities for additional bank products and other lines of business, referring to other teams as appropriate.
- Be our customers’ go-to banker for all their banking needs. Build relationships with customers, anticipate their needs, and educate and demonstrate our various products.
- Build our customers’ trust and keep them coming back! Resolve customer problems and help them understand their options.
- Respect and obey the rules. Comply with all applicable policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
- Present a professional appearance as the face of our bank.
- Use the utmost discretion and treat confidential information with the highest respect and integrity. Our customers rely on us to be the first line of defense of their banking information.
- Assist with routine tasks from other departments when appropriate and asked with a cheerful, can-do attituded.
- Be there. Everyday. Your coworkers rely on you and need you! Regular and reliable attendance is required for this customer facing position.
To perform the above duties, you will need the following:
- High school degree or equivalent.
- 1-2 years of teller experience, or related financial services experience that includes cash handling, balancing drawers and customer service.
- Internal drive to seek out opportunities to exceed customer expectations.
- Critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
- Consistency, efficiency, and accuracy when processing customer transactions. You pay attention to details.
- Ability to work cooperatively with teammates recognizing that you count on each other.

- Passion for customer service and helping people. You are patient.
- Ability to learn new things quickly. When things change, you can roll with the punches. You can retain what you learn.

- Working knowledge and use of a personal computer, MS Office tools such as Word and Excel, strong 10-key skills. You are also savvy with technology and quickly learn systems.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
- Knowledge of basic math functions.
- Regular attendance. You are on time and recognize you are relied upon to be at work every day.
Stand out if you have:
- Prior experience as a teller/processor and experience with offering bank products and services.
- General knowledge of bank products, policies and procedures, banking compliance and banking principles.
- Some undergraduate college classes.
