Summary:
Central States’ Building Works division is seeking a Building Works Intern to gain hands-on experience in Pre-Engineered Metal Building (PEMB) estimation, design, and drafting. The intern will work closely with the Engineering and Operations team to understand the full lifecycle of metal building projects—from estimation and design to fabrication and project management.
This internship provides an opportunity to learn under the direct supervision of a Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) while contributing to critical engineering tasks.
Core Functions:
- Assist with estimation, design, and drafting activities for metal building projects.
- Gain hands-on experience with structural design and engineering software, including MBS, AutoCAD, STAAD, RISA, and Tekla.
- Learn how to prepare Anchor Bolt plans, Approval Drawings, and design calculations for engineering review.
- Shadow projects throughout the detailing and fabrication process.
- Develop an understanding of customer requirements and how to translate structural drawings into PEMB design concepts.
- Contribute to engineering workflows, including project releases and manufacturing coordination.

Education & Experience:
- Majors Preferred: Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering.
- Technical Skills: Experience with structural design software (MBS, CAD, STAAD, Tekla) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Education Level: Juniors & Seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
- Professionalism: Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and team collaboration abilities.
- High school diploma or equivalent

Work is performed in an office environment. This role will routinely utilize standard office equipment to perform the core functions listed in this job description. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies as well as communicate verbally and electronically. The work is primarily sedentary and requires extensive reading to perform the core functions listed in this job description. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud and in a non-temperature-controlled environment. While performing the core function of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand, and required to lift to 35 lbs. This position is primarily working around machinery with moving parts, working around moving objects or vehicles. The employee is frequently required to walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach/pull/push/grab with hands and arms, kneel, and crouch, twist and bend.
