POSITION: Staff Accountant/Bookkeeper
REPORTS TO: Finance and HR Manager, Executive Director
Employee Status: Full Time, Exempt
Compensation: $55,000 to $65,000 annual salary
Position Summary: The Staff Accountant plays a crucial role in ensuring the financial health and integrity of the organization. This position is responsible for a variety of accounting and bookkeeping tasks, including maintaining accurate financial records, processing payroll, and preparing financial reports. By supporting the organization’s financial operations, the Staff Accountant contributes to the overall mission of providing affordable housing to the local community. This position requires a strong attention to detail, adherence to legal and regulatory standards, and the ability to collaborate effectively with team members across different departments.
Background: Founded in 1988, Central Valley Habitat for Humanity is a vibrant, medium size affiliate providing affordable homes to qualified families in Harrisonburg City and Rockingham County, VA. Benefits: Paid time off, and holidays. A monthly stipend is provided for short- and long-term disability, vision insurance, dental insurance (available from HFHAVA) and health insurance (through the Marketplace). This stipend may also be used to pay for a 403 (b) retirement plan.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business management or a related field; CPA preferred.
- At least 2-3 years of accounting or bookkeeping experience, ideally in a nonprofit setting.
- Must pass Criminal Background Check and Sexual Offender Check.
- Ability to reliably commute to Bridgewater office location, Monday-Friday 8-5pm. Ability to travel to Restore location in Harrisonburg as needed for reconciliations.
Key Responsibilities:
· Manage accounts payable and receivable, ensuring timely payments and collection. Bookkeeping for all A/P and A/R, donation management, tax filings, grant reporting, reconcile bank statements and general ledger accounts. Production of monthly financials for Finance Manager, Executive Director and Board.
· Participate in internal and external audits, ensuring compliance with financial policies.
· Work with outside accounting firm to prepare and file annual 990.
· Work with the Construction Manager to synchronize efforts to meet the construction budget and the affiliate budget. Coding, entering budget within construction software (CoConstruct). Works w/ Construction manager and ReStore Manager on A/P and A/R.
- Work as an effective and proactive team player. Collaboration, networking, and relationship-building skills are important.
- Evaluate, re-develop and update internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure financial integrity.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Must possess a positive, optimistic outlook that fosters an upbeat work environment and contributes to a positive volunteer experience.
- Willingness to learn our construction management program (Co Construct).
- Provide consultation and reporting assistance as requested to CVHFH Committees, Executive Director, Finance and HR Manager.
- Assist with budget creation and periodic forecasting.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements

Experience:
-Should possess proficiency in QuickBooks Online, Outlook, Office 365, recordkeeping, and data entry.
-Strong knowledge of payroll, accounts payable, and general ledger processes.
-Preference to applicants that are knowledgeable in software that integrates fundraising, project scheduling, and donor development.
Employment Eligibility:
Is contingent on passing a background check, sex offender registry check, and may require fingerprinting. Employment is also contingent on the ability to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States within three days of hire.
