Central Valley Indian Health, Inc. is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist. This position will primarily perform Medical Assistant duties and assist in phlebotomy, as needed. The incumbent holds a “Safety Sensitive” position and assists medical staff in the provision of health care services. Provides phlebotomy services to patients of CVIH and responsible for HIPAA Compliance.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Phlebotomy:
A. Clean lab draw area after each use and at the end of the day according to protocol.
B. Collect blood samples from patients as ordered by CVIH and specialty physicians for analysis or other medical purposes.
C. Label the collection tube with the patient's name and other information required by the facility; along with the time and date of collection.
D. Prepare specimen(s) according to guidelines and temperatures of ordered lab test.
E. Assemble equipment (tourniquet, needles, disposable containers, blood collection devices, etc.) on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
F. Verify and record identity of patient. Converse with patient to allay fear of procedure.
G. Maintain patient confidentiality according to HIPAA, IHS Privacy Act and CVIH standards and protocols.
H. Practice Universal Precautions.
I. Verify all information regarding patient’s insurance, complete all necessary information for lab requisitions.
J. Responsible for lab area cleanliness, stocking, and expiring supplies.
K. Ensure patients have been signed in prior to being called back for their appointment. Communicate with front desk staff if there are delays that would affect patient care.

II. Medical Provider Support:
L. Clean rooms between each visit and at the end of the day according to protocol.
M. Escort patients to exam rooms, obtain vitals, and perform required tests & assessments required by CHDP, Diabetes & GPRA guidelines, and CVIH policies and procedures.
N. Prepare the patient and the exam room for medical services.
O. Perform lab tests and lab specimens as required by protocol.
P. Maintain patient confidentiality according to CVIH standards and protocols.
Q. Responsible for exam room cleanliness, stocking, and expiring supplies. This includes sterilizing and storing all instruments.
R. Responsible for Universal Precautions, and disposal of biohazardous waste in exam rooms daily.
S. Handle calling, documenting and faxing refills as needed.
T. Ensure patients have been signed in prior to being called back.
U. Communicate with front desk staff if patients are being called back or if there are delays that would affect patient flow.
V. Perform in-house and/or send out testing and vaccinations as requested by the Provider. Monitor patients’ post vaccine and provide education on side effects.

III. Quality Assurance:
X. Participate in departmental quality assurance activities and assist in upcoming audits as assigned by the RN.
Y. Keep daily log book to verify all results are received back on labs that were drawn.
Z. Communicate in a friendly and professional manner to others. Provide excellent service/support to all patients, employees, and outside contacts.
AA. Any other duties assigned to the employee by the supervisor or CVIH Administration.

Requirements

1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Medical Assistant Certificate and current Phlebotomy license.
3. Valid CPR Certificate.
4. Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time, and kneel, squat, reach, and bend.
5. Ability to lift or carry 30 lbs, and push or pull objects weighing 50 lbs or less.
6. Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively to educate patients and those involved in patient care.
7. Normal hearing (aids permitted) in order to detect critical information regarding patients’ conditions.
8. Vision is required within normal limits for reading medical data and blood draws.
9. One-year experience in medical office procedures preferred.
10. Knowledge of office skills, typing, filing, medical terminology, and computer literate.
11. A valid California Driver’s License and clean driving record with the ability to be insured under CVIH’s automobile insurance.
12. An awareness and keen appreciation of, or willingness to learn, Indian traditions, customs, and socioeconomic needs. Ability to meet and deal effectively with Indian health organizations consisting of numerous tribes with varied cultures. Requires tact, courtesy, discretion, resourcefulness, and good judgment in handling functions of a sensitive nature.
13. “Safety Sensitive” positions are subject to random drug testing and are required as a condition of continued employment.

Summary

This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
