Position Summary:
The Childcare Assistant for Domestic Violence Programs at Centro Romero is responsible for providing a safe and nurturing environment for children affected by domestic violence while their parents attend support group sessions. This position involves implementing non-violent play activities, promoting healthy development through structured play, and ensuring children’s safety and emotional well-being. The ideal candidate will be compassionate, sensitive to the needs of children and families in crisis and committed to supporting the healthy development of children through appropriate activities and supervision.
Responsibilities:
Supervision & Support:
· Provide childcare during Domestic Violence Support Group sessions, ensuring a safe and engaging environment.
· Always supervise children, ensuring they are safe, cared for, and engaged in educational or meaningful play.
· Implement consistent routines, rules, and non-violent discipline strategies, ensuring children understand behavioral expectations appropriate to their age.
· When needed, calmly handle child emergencies by calling 911 and informing parents/guardians and DV Program Director, DV staff.
· Assist in creating weekly childcare activity plans with the DV Program Director.
· Provide snacks for children as appropriate.
· Communicate effectively with parents, the DV Program Director, and other program staff about children's needs, including emotional, social, and physical well-being.
· Maintain cleanliness and organization in childcare spaces before and after each session.
Collaboration & Documentation:
· Assist with intake processes for children attending the childcare group.
· Complete assessments and maintain accurate documentation of children’s progress and any incidents in a timely manner.
· Supervise volunteers working with children in the childcare group.
· Maintain an inventory of childcare supplies and ensure they are replenished as needed.
Additional Duties:
· Participate in Centro Romero’s fundraising events when needed.
· Attend and contribute to regular staff meetings and training.
· Participate in additional program activities, such as special events or field trips.
· Perform other duties as assigned by the Domestic Violence Program Director.
Qualifications:
Required:
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· 2 years of experience working in a childcare or educational classroom setting.
· 40-hour domestic violence training required within the first three months of hire.
· Bilingual (English/Spanish) and Bicultural: Required to communicate effectively with a diverse client population.
· Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen, coach, and lead.
· Ability to multitask, prioritize tasks, and remain composed in high-stress situations.
· CPR and First Aid Certification required.
· Strong communication skills and a friendly, energetic demeanor.
· Sensitivity to the needs of children and families affected by domestic violence.
· Ability to foster a nurturing, inclusive, and supportive environment for children.
Preferred:
· Child Development Associate credential or a degree in early childhood education or a related field.
· Experience in crisis intervention or working with children from disenfranchised communities.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift children between 30 and 40 pounds.
- Ability to move boxes weighing between 10 and 20 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stand, and move for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish.
Additional Notes:
This position requires flexibility, patience, and a high level of responsibility. The Childcare Assistant should be able to work with children aged 4 months to 12 years, creating a stimulating and secure environment while fostering meaningful relationships with both children and their families. This position is (10 hours per week), and the candidate should be willing to contribute to the broader mission of Centro Romero through various program activities and events.
