Job Summary:
Responsible for translating descriptions of medical diagnosis and procedures into codes to record health care data. Responsible for working with the clinical staff to ensure coding is in compliance with coding and documentation guidelines and governmental requirements.
Essential Functions:
- Maintains a working knowledge of CPT and International Classification of Disease, governmental regulations, protocols and third party requirements.
- Reads and analyzes medical records to help identify all diagnoses, operations and procedures relevant to the current episode of patient care.
- Clarifies inconsistent, ambiguous or non-specific information in a medical record by consulting with the responsible medical provider.
- Allocates codes to patient’s current episode of care, using knowledge of the conventions if ICD-9-CM.
- Conducts all quality assessment of work to ensure continuous improvement in ICD-9-CM, CPT-4 and HCPCS Level II coding systems.
- Assess the medical record content and highlight inadequacies in summary format to immediate supervisor.
- Conducts a review of patient charts to ensure compliance with coding and documentation guidelines and governmental requirements.
- Provides accurate answers to providers’ coding and/or billing questions on a timely basis.
- Maintains ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM coding books to ensure they are updated to the current version being used.
- Assists with medical research and case projects.
- Assists with the continuing education of clinical staff with regard to ICD-9-CM and CPT-4.
- Participates as a part of the business office team in performing business-related functions, (i.e., receptionist, patient billing, clerical assistance, etc.).
- Maintain Certification (CCS-P, CPC, etc).
- Maintain annual CEU’s.
- Communicates and demonstrates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

- Broad based knowledge of services in a health care setting required.
- Willing to continually update skills and knowledge.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Certification (CCS-P, CPC, etc.) required.
- Certificate of completion of an accredited HIT program/credential bound required.
- Minimum one (1) year experience working as a coding specialist.
- Experience providing one-on-one feedback to providers preferred.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: From $18.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
