Job Title : Sterile Processing Technician

Shift : Variable - 0800-1630, 0900-1730, 1000-1830, 5x8 Hour Shifts

Guaranteed Hours : 40 hours per week

Experience : 6 months of experience preferred

License : Not specified

Certifications : CRCST / CSPDT required

Must-Have : Computer skills required, English language proficiency (read, write, speak)

Job Description :

• Promote improved quality and patient safety in the OR by ensuring the efficient flow of the Sterile Processing department.
• Perform routine tasks relating to the decontamination, processing, sterilization, and distribution of instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies.
• Responsible for operating and monitoring sterilization equipment.
• Maintain records in compliance with AAMI, AORN, Joint Commission, or relevant entity and OSHA standards.
• Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the importance of patient safety in the OR.
• Facilitate the department's preparation of staff to pass survey / regulatory assessments.
• Sterilize supplies and instruments using the prescribed method (e.g., steam, gas plasma).
• Operate washer / decontaminator per department policy and procedure.
• Understand the basic principles of all sterilization equipment used in the department.
• Demonstrate knowledge of packaging items for successful sterilization.
• Follow manufacturer's recommendations (IFU's).
• Assure cleanliness of decontamination, sterilization, and equipment areas.
• Validate the proper functioning of all equipment using established mechanical and biological monitors.
• Ensure sterilized supplies and instruments are correctly labeled and stored to ensure sterility, complying with regulatory guidelines.
• Uphold all quality, infection prevention, regulatory, and Joint Commission Standards at all times.
• Demonstrate technical skills needed to establish and maintain High-Level Disinfection (HLD) processes.
• Utilize features of computerized tray / instrument tracking system, if applicable.
• Apply knowledge of the dress code related to Standard Precautions and consistently wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Report any life safety issues, environmental concerns, or process deviations to immediate supervisor.
• Develop awareness and understanding around what is at stake with patients in the OR.
• Facilitate the department's preparation of staff to pass survey / regulatory assessments.
• Maintain a customer-friendly rapport with peers and internal / external customers.
• Provide on-call coverage outside of standard scheduled hours per department and / or facility policy.
• Ensure records reflect work activity as prescribed by department policy.
• Assist in the transportation of sterilized instrumentation to the operating rooms as needed.
• Verify that required instrumentation has been sterilized and is available for next-day, call, or weekend cases.
• Assist in removing soiled case carts or un-sterile instrumentation from the operating room department.
• Respond to problem calls from Surgery during regular business hours.
• Floating may be required to any location within sixty (60) miles of the original assignment location or identified float zone.
• Float assignments may include duties outside of original assignment job requirements in accordance with policy.
