Position Description
As the leader of the Golf Maintenance Team, the Golf Course Superintendent directs, coaches and coordinates the activities of workers engaged in the repair, maintenance of the golf course grounds, landscaping and related structures and buildings. This includes meeting or exceeding the established standards for guest and employee satisfaction along with expedient cost control for the department. As the Golf Course Superintendent, you must lead by example by taking a proactive position to all issues concerning the operation of the golf course.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor of Science Degree in Turf Science, Landscape, Agronomy or similar field, or equivalent work experience. Restricted Pesticide License. Two years of proven experience as class B Superintendent, or work equivalent.
Associates of Science Degree in Landscape or Golf Operations or similar field, or equivalent work experience. Restricted Pesticide License. Two years of proven experience as class B Superintendent, or work equivalent.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, and financial reports, legal documents. The ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from guests, neighbors, or regulatory agencies. Ability to effectively present information to management.
FINANCIAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rates, rations, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volumes of cones, cylinders, etc.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
Ability to calibrate sprayers, spreaders, scientific instruments, computer software, etc.
Ability to operate basic software including word processor, spreadsheet, and email software, irrigation control software.
Solid understanding in preventative maintenance systems.
Basic understanding of mechanical operations of engines and hydraulics for guidance of equipment managers.
REASONING ABILITY
Have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

DUTIES & FUNCTIONS
Essential:
- The Golf Course Superintendent must lead by example. He sets the benchmark of performance in the area of innovation, motivation and animation for his team.
- The Golf Course Superintendent will interview and hire key staff positions including the First Assistant, Equipment Manager, Irrigation Technician and Spray Technician.
- The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for appraising performance of the First Assistant, if applicable, Equipment Manager, Irrigation Technician and Spray Technician in a timely fashion according to the company’s established guidelines.
- The Golf Course Superintendent must function as a coach in encouraging team members to be successful in both a professional and personal capacity.
- The Golf Course Superintendent will support and encourage succession plans for the team member of the golf course maintenance team by demonstrating a commitment to personal learning and development.
- Develop preventative maintenance programs in conjunction with the Director of Agronomy.
- Reviews quality control and budget statistics to plan and modify maintenance activities.
- Spot-checks machines and equipment for conformance with operational standards.
- Plans, develops and implements new methods and procedures designed to improve operations, minimize maintenance costs, improve course conditioning.
- Reviews new plans and discusses equipment needs and modification with General Manager.
- Requisitions tools, equipment and supplies for use in maintenance operations.
- Direct training and onboarding of new employees to improve work performance and acquaint workers with company policies and procedures.
- Confer with management to resolve maintenance problems and recommend measures to improve operations and conditions of equipment, systems and golf course.
- Monitor expenditures to insure budget compliance.
- The Golf Course Superintendent must maintain effective communication with all team members regarding course operation, human resources issues, and general Whirlwind communication. It is important that the Golf Course Superintendent demonstrate the Team Member Commitments and code of conduct of the Whirlwind Golf Club through demonstration by example.
- The Golf Course Superintendent will help create a shared vision for a stable golf maintenance environment.
