Field Geologist

About the Role
CES Group Engineers, LLP, an award-winning multi-discipline firm serving the Carolinas and beyond, is seeking a Field Geologist with one to three or more years of relevant field and office experience to join our growing environmental team. This role involves performing field-based work such as site assessments, drilling oversight, and environmental monitoring. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working outdoors in varying conditions and traveling within North and South Carolina.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently perform a variety of field-based tasks, including:
- NC and SC 811 clearance mark-outs
- Receptor surveys and site assessments
- Drilling oversight
- Monitoring and collection of soil, groundwater, stormwater, air, and sediment samples
- SPCC, SWPPP, and NPDES monitoring at industrial facilities
- Construction compliance site inspections
- Prepare site-specific HASP’s, JHA’s, permits, and access agreements prior to fieldwork.
- Coordinate and schedule fieldwork with contractors, suppliers, laboratories, homeowners, and regulatory agencies.
- Assist Project Managers with work orders, receptor surveys, permit applications, and monitoring reports.
- Draft site location maps, radius maps, site plans, and contour maps in AutoCAD.
QualificationsEducation & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- 1-3 years of experience in Environmental Engineering, Geology, or a related field.
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to independently perform outdoor fieldwork in variable weather conditions.
- Comfortable traveling within North and South Carolina, with occasional overnight stays.
- Ability to carry up to 50 lbs of field equipment across varying terrains.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Preferred (but not required) Experience
- AutoCAD and/or GIS proficiency.
- Experience in asbestos, lead, and indoor air quality assessments.
- Stream and wetland assessments, delineation, and monitoring.
- Brownfields and 404/401 permitting experience.
Certifications
- OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification required (or ability to obtain before employment).
Work Environment
- Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8 AM - 5 PM (occasional extended hours as needed to meet project deadlines).
- Travel: Regular travel within NC and SC, with some overnight stays.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs of field equipment.
