What are the responsibilities and job description for the Paralegal, Adjudication position at CFP BD OF STANDARD CTR FOR FINANCIAL PLANNING?
Under the supervision of the Associate General Counsel, Adjudication, the Adjudication Paralegal provides critical support to department attorneys and to CFP Board’s Disciplinary and Ethics Commission, including case scheduling, docket and records management, hearing material preparation, issuance of orders, and drafting correspondence with parties.
Essential Functions:
- Manages with other department paralegals an active docket of approximately 200 cases per year to help ensure disciplinary matters are resolved expeditiously under CFP Board’s Procedural Rules.
- Drafts case-related documents for Adjudication attorney review, including scheduling orders, order templates, and correspondence to parties.
- Provides logistical and other support to CFP Board’s Disciplinary and Ethics Commission, a peer-review body of CFP® professionals and members of the public that evaluates alleged violations of the Code and Standards and candidate fitness for CFP® certification.
- Helps to facilitate in-person and virtual disciplinary hearings.
- Reviews and maintains case filings in an organized records archive.
- Compiles and distributes all case materials (“DEC Books”) to be used in hearings and reviews by the Commission, hearing panelists, and the parties.
- Assists Adjudication attorneys with recruitment and training of hearing panelists.
- Keeps current the Adjudication docket and other CFP Board databases to ensure ready access to case data and accurate reporting on Adjudication metrics and function.
- Attends meetings of CFP Board Councils, Committees, and Commissions, and drafts meeting minutes.
- Collaborates with other CFP Board staff on planning and preparation for Commission hearings, and on the issuance of press releases announcing public sanctions.
- Prepares, submits and tracks department invoices and expense reports related to Commission hearings and meetings through accounting system (Concur).
- Conducts legal research as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Background/Skills/Abilities Preferred
- Bachelor’s or associate’s degree and/or a paralegal certificate.
- Minimum 2 years of legal experience.
- Knowledge and experience working with case dockets, case files, or large volumes of documents.
- Experience and expertise with litigation and/or adjudication.
- Proficiency in legal software or systems, such as Westlaw, Clio, PACER.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel) and experience in association management systems (NetFORUM) preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to deal with confidential/sensitive matters in a discrete and professional manner.
- Outstanding attention to detail and strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to write and communicate in a legal environment.
- Ability to analyze relevant data and present it logically in a clear, accessible manner; critical thinking is essential.
- Strong customer service skills.

This position is based in the Washington D.C. office and works a hybrid schedule which could be changed at any time.

CFP Board is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The applicable starting annual base salary is anticipated to be in the range of $63,500.00 to $75,000.00. In addition to base salary, total compensation includes incentive compensation for which employees are eligible based on completion of individual goals.
