Basic Function

The Fleet Services Technician performs preventative maintenance, routine maintenance / repairs, and emergency repairs on all organizational-owned vehicles, including Construction Equipment, Automobiles, Light, Medium, and Heavy-Duty Trucks, Fire Apparatus, Ambulances, Police Pursuit units as well as other Fleet assets.

Essential Job Functions

  • Models our Core Competencies and champions our Culture.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance and state inspections on the vehicle fleet of standard and emergency vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs troubleshooting and accurate diagnoses of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and computerized vehicle components.
  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled repairs to the vehicle fleet of standard and emergency vehicles and equipment.
  • Repairs standard and emergency vehicles and equipment conforming to industry, City, State, and Federal standards.
  • Responds to roadside or field repairs.
  • Utilizes fleet maintenance software to record detailed and accurate documentation of service and repairs.
  • Conducts new vehicle and equipment check-in, make-ready, and decommissioning operations.
  • Performs good housekeeping practices to maintain the shop, work area, tools, and equipment in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Test drives / operate vehicles and equipment before and after repairs.
  • Interacts in a professional and respectful manner with coworkers, other city employees, vendors, and the public.
  • Regular and punctual attendance is required.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Must be self-motivated with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must have knowledge of repairs and troubleshooting of automotive, heavy truck, and construction equipment.
  • Ability to read, understand and comprehend owners’ manuals, repairs manuals, schematics, and drawings to repair and maintain the fleet in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations for troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repair procedures.
  • Knowledge of fluids and components used in the repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper disposal procedures for used oils, chemicals, and other hazardous materials.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, contribute as a team member and treat others with respect.
  • Ability to prioritize, monitor, and organize work assignments efficiently.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions to complete tasks as assigned.

  • Ability to work after normal business hours, weekends, and weekdays, as needed.
  • Skill in operating shop tools and equipment while following safety practices and standard operating procedures.

  • Skilled in the use of computers, maintenance software, and other office equipment.
  • Skill in proactively identifying and resolving issues, consistently making sound decisions, and correctly executing policy processes and procedures.
  • Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 2 years of experience in automotive and truck repair.
  • 1 years of small engine repair experience.
  • 1 years of heavy equipment experience is preferred.
  • Must have at least one ASE certification in Automotive or Heavy Truck.
  • Must have one Master ASE certification (Master Medium / Heavy Truck Technician or Master Automobile Technician) or ability to obtain within the first 18 months of employment.
  • Must be “Official State of Texas Vehicle Inspector” or obtain within first six months of employment.
  • A Class C Texas Driver’s License, with a good driving record is required.
  • A Class B CDL Texas Driver License or ability to obtain within the first 12 months of employment.
  • Must have Mobile A / C certification, MACS, or equivalent.
  • Required to be On-Call 24 hours a day for a seven-day period on a rotating schedule.
  • will take home work for for one week a month)

  • Must provide tools and toolboxes as required of a Fleet Technician.
  • License and certifications must be maintained during the term of employment.
  • Working Conditions

  • Physical demands essential to a Fleet Technician include strenuous activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, sweeping, and carrying heavy objects.
  • Frequent standing, crawling, kneeling, crouching, balancing, stooping, and climbing will be required.

    Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force consistently.

    Mental and visual acuity along with talking and hearing are required to routinely perform physical activities and maintain a safe work environment.

    Safety PPE equipment is provided and must be worn as required by policy and good safety practices.

    Work is performed primarily inside and outside and is subject to all types of weather and temperature conditions.

    The worker may be exposed to chemicals, solvents, fumes, smoke and gases, and various types of surfaces, including slippery or uneven surfaces.
