Position Description
The Department of Ethnic Studies at Chaffey College as a new department is seeking dynamic scholar-teachers whose scholarship and teaching are centered on the cultures and histories of communities that have played a vital force in shaping America.
The Department of Ethnic Studies at Chaffey College is committed to the scholarly teachings and representations of the four core disciplines in the field which are comprised of Native American Studies, African American Studies, Chicanx and Latinx Studies, and Asian American Studies.
Native American Studies at Chaffey College is an interdisciplinary program that offers students opportunities to study the governments, nations, cultures, social and political structures in American Indian societies and American Indian societies within the context of the United States. The Program's curriculum focuses on and prioritizes American Indian scholars, cultural-intellectual practices, traditional knowledge systems, and Indigenous teaching and leadership methodologies to engage all students in diverse learning experiences and grow their understanding and competency in American Indian Studies.
May include teaching in the prisons and/or high school dual enrollment.
All applicants are expected to meet the California State Community College Minimum Qualifications for Ethnic Studies instructors (below). Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee employment or an interview.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Master's degree in Native American/American Indian Studies OR
• Master's degree in Ethnic Studies AND Bachelor's degree in Native American/American Indian studies OR
• The equivalent OR
• A valid lifetime credential that authorizes service as an Ethnic Studies Instructor in a California Community College; AND
• Demonstrated evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds in a community college environment.
MEETING MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS DOES NOT ASSURE THE CANDIDATE OF AN INTERVIEW. Applications will be evaluated taking into account the breadth and depth of relevant education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
• Recent experience teaching Ethnic Studies courses in person and online through Canvas, preferably at the community college level.
• Evidence of developing and implementing teaching strategies focused on engaging in person and online students with their learning, using innovative online teaching methods, instructional design, and assessment strategies.
• Preference may be given to candidates with recent experience in teaching Native American Studies (ETHN-2).
• High level of professional and pedagogical expertise in Ethnic Studies, African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicanx/Latinx Studies, Native American Studies from an accredited college or university.
• Evidence of a demonstrated commitment to equity in the community college setting.
