BAND DIRECTOR
1. A valid Alabama teacher certificate.
QUALIFICATIONS:
2. Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require. FLSA STATUS: Exempt SUPERVISED BY: Principal SUPERVISES: Assistant Band Director(s), designated Auxiliary Unit sponsors, interns, and/or student assistants
1. Knowledge of Board’s policies and procedures, school rules, and applicable state regulations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
2. Knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade level assigned.
3. Knowledge of school’s program of studies related to mission, goals and organization.
4. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers.
5. Knowledge and skill in the development and effective operation of a school instrumental music program.
6. Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
7. Excellent human relations and public relation skills.
8. Knowledge of first aid and safety procedures.
9. Ability to use technology to perform job responsibilities.
10. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform the essential functions of the position.
1. Serves as a role model and works toward the development of good character and desirable attitudes among students.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
2. Ensures fair and impartial treatment of all students.
3. Displays technical competence in band direction.
4. Develops and implements a program of instruction based upon the goals and standards of the National Association for Music Education to include technical instruction, chamber music, listening, music theory, and group performance.
5. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
6. Develops an appropriate and justifiable system for the evaluation and grading of students under his/her supervision.
7. Prepares the band and other instrumental groups for appropriate public performances in keeping with the expectations of the school, principal, and community.
8. Directs the organization, supervision, and discipline of students during classes and at public events.
9. Works with other band directors and school officials in the school system to insure a continuous and correlated development through all levels of band instruction.
10. Prepares and distributes materials that inform students and their parents of the requirements for band participation, band policies, schedules, and related program information.
11. Attends meetings, practices, games, events and activities associated with assigned band direction responsibilities.
12. Works with the principal, school staff, and boosters in improving and maintaining existing facilities, equipment, uniforms, and band resources.
13. Demonstrates proper professional and ethical behavior at all times.
14. Coordinates scheduling, transportation, supervision and publicity for the school band program.
15. Prepares and administers the budget for the band program; expends and accounts for program funds in accordance with school system procedures.
16. Supervises and coordinates participation in competitive events involving individual band students and the school band program.
17. Directs sales and advertising campaigns to benefit the band program; seeks collaborative partnerships with community agencies and grant opportunities to benefit the band program.
18. Insures to the maximum extent possible, the safety and well-being of all participants in the band program.
19. Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation.
20. Gives attention to band students’ grades, school conduct and overall well-being.
21. Coordinates and supervises auxiliary or adjunct groups that perform with the band.
22. Coordinates the proper maintenance and use of instrumental music facilities.
23. Reports injuries according to Board policy and school procedures.

24. Promotes the band program through appropriate recruiting and publicity activities.
25. Models and maintains high ethical standards.
26. Keeps principal informed of potential problems or unusual events.

28. Serves on school/system committees as required or appropriate.
29. Exhibits interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
30. Demonstrates support for the school system and its goals and priorities.
31. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement.
32. Performs other tasks associated with this position as may be assigned. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT The terms of employment shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board’s salary schedule. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
