JOB DESCRIPTION
1. A valid Alabama teacher certificate in the area of instructional exceptionality.
QUALIFICATIONS:
2. Must meet definition for highly qualified teacher according to Alabama definition
3. Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
4. Such alternatives to the above as the Board may require. FLSA STATUS: Exempt SUPERVISED BY: Principal, Special Education Director SUPERVISES: Job Coach, Paraprofessionals, Teacher Interns as assigned REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: JOB GOAL: Teachers, in partnership with parents and the community, will be dedicated to producing skilled, responsible graduates by providing and supporting high quality, highly effective public schools.
1. Administers educational achievement tests to assess students’ levels of competencies and needs.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
2. Assesses students’ needs in the areas of academics, behavior, social/emotional development, transition and related services.
3. Schedules referral, eligibility, reevaluation, and IEP meetings, as well as any other needed meetings.
4. Coordinates and assists in the development of an IEP designed to provide special education and related services that meets the educational, behavioral, social/emotional, functional, developmental and transitional needs of the student through the establishment of goals, benchmarks and timelines.
5. Employs a variety of instructional techniques consistent with the individual needs and capabilities of the students.
6. Monitors student participation and progress in regular education programs, by collaborating with regular education teachers and providing remediation materials upon request.
7. Assumes the leadership role in eligibility and IEP meetings and completes forms relevant to input on students discussed at the meetings.
8. Evaluates the educational program and student progress according to the IEP.
9. Attends workshops, conferences and/or conventions related to special education services to maintain growth in professional development and meet state certification guidelines.
10. Maintains appropriate records according to guidelines and submits reports as required.
11. Establishes and maintains a standard of student behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
12. Maintains open lines of communication with students, support agencies, and the student’s parents concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of the students.
13. Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, methods, and the development of the curriculum.
14. Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
15. Models and maintains high ethical standards.
16. Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
17. Maintains expertise in assigned area to fulfill project goals and objectives.
18. Participates successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.
19. Keeps supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
20. Responds to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
21. Serves on school/system committees as required or appropriate.
22. Exhibits interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
23. Demonstrates support for the school system and its goals and priorities.
24. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement.
25. Prepares all required reports and maintains all appropriate records within required time lines.
26. Assumes other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.
27. Use technology in the classroom and for management of the special education process. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be according to the Board’s salary schedule. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policies and programs of evaluation of professional personnel.
