Title: Adjunct Faculty Clinical Nursing

Department: School of Nursing and Health Professions

Exempt

II. Position Summary

The responsibilities of this position are comprised of teaching in assigned courses in the Nursing curriculum. The Adjunct Faculty is expected to remain current in the discipline and pedagogy. The Adjunct Faculty is also expected to participate actively in curriculum delivery, development, and assessment. The Adjunct Faculty will hold regular office hours in support of students.

IV. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet clinical faculty responsibilities as described by the Chaminade University’s Policy Manual IV.
  • Support policies as stated in the Chaminade School of Nursing Handbook and Course Syllabus: Program Requirements, Clinical Guidelines, Ethics, Professionalism, Universal Precaution/Blood Borne Pathogen Policies and Control Plan.
  • Complete requirements for specific clinical sites such as but not limited to health requirements, orientation, etc.
  • Participate in clinical orientation sessions, course coordination meetings and special meetings relative to the course and university.
  • Provide clinical instruction including but not limited to orientation of students to clinical site, assign students to specific patients, facilitate patient assignments, demonstrate clinical procedures, observe student performance, preconference and post conference with students.
  • Select student clinical patient assignments that are appropriate to course content/clinical objectives.
  • Supervise patient assignment according to course level and student’s abilities.
  • Maintain anecdotal notes for students, documenting performance and recommendations made to the student. Confer with each student at the completion of a clinical rotation as a component of the clinical performance evaluation process.
  • Evaluate students’ written assignments related to clinical experience and return same to students within a reasonable time preferably the next clinical day.
  • Provide evaluation of the clinical site per the guidelines of the School of Nursing and Health Professions.
  • Demonstrate and maintain a professional relationship with agency staff, faculty, and students. Promote positive and productive relationships with service area hospitals, clinics, industries, and agencies.
  • Complete and submit all end-of-course materials related to student performance no later than a week after student course evaluations.
  • Confer with respective Course Coordinator on an as needed basis to coordinate clinical scheduling.
  • Confer with agency personnel at the beginning and end of the instructional term, documenting issues in the form of “Clinical After Action” report.

VI. Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in nursing with one year of nursing experience in the area of teaching responsibility or Bachelor’s degree with 3 years clinical experience in the area of teaching responsibility. 
  • Registered nurse licensure in state of Hawaii.

 VII. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 

  • Demonstrate and encourages critical thinking skills.
  • Serve as a role model for students in professional interaction with other health workers and with clinical facilities
  • Be prompt and punctual in reporting for clinical and in meeting with the students.
  • Maintain high standards and promote excellence in education.
  • Continue as competent clinical faculty in nursing by seeking new knowledge, improving teaching skills, and updating professional competencies.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications (both writing and speaking), presentation and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and work with individuals at all levels of the university.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • High integrity and ethical standards. 

VIII. Physical Requirements

Duties involve light work in an office and community setting and requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking inclines. Must be able to lift 20 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills.  Must have finger dexterity. Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.

IX. Other Requirements: 

  • This is a part time, exempt position. Nineteen hours per week (M-F) will be the general rule. However, depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required.   Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and a varying schedule.
  • Performs such similar, comparable or related duties as may be assigned or required
  • Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner
