- Reporting Relationship
This position reports to the Dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. This position will be required to submit weekly verbal and written reports as requested by the supervisor. Since this is a grant funded position with duties associated with Federal funding, day to day supervision will be the grant Principal Investigator.
- Position Summary
The Visiting Professor in Computer Science will be responsible for teaching, scholarship (original research), and service. This position leads Computer Science curriculum development, delivery, and assessment for, and teaches, undergraduate Computer Science certificate, degree programs, and other programs, as well as master’s level courses. The position requires independent Computer Science research leading to the publication of peer-reviewed papers, grant submissions and other scholarly products. This position involves community-based special projects in Computer Science. This position involves advising students, holding regular office hours in support of students, and assist students with navigation towards internships, traineeships, and jobs in Computer Science and related areas. This position will include performing all duties professionally and ethically, and support the policies and mission of the University. This position is grant funded and dependent on continued receipt of extramural funding. This is a grant funded position contingent on extramural funding availability. This position is funded completely or in part by funds received from NSF, NIH and private funders. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program and/or operational needs of the University and the availability of grant funds.
- Duties and Responsibilities
The role of an Assistant Professor is laid out in the CUH Policy Manual IV. The Assistant Professor is responsible for the following additional essential duties:
Teaching:
- Teaches 21 load hours per academic year in undergraduate Computer Science, Data Science, and other degree programs, as well as master’s level courses and certificate programs.
- Dependent upon extramural funding, and confirmation by grant Principal Investigator and Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, this position may be released from teaching for the purposes of community outreach in computer science (3 credits per semester).
- Dependent upon extramural funding, and confirmation by grant Principal Investigator and Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, this position may be released from teaching for the purposes of scholarly research in Computer Science (3 credits per semester).
- Develops and delivers courses, curriculum modules, and content as required by the department and school.
- Engages in assessment and evaluation activities for course, curriculum modules, content, and teaching effectiveness.
Scholarship (Research):
- Performs skilled computational and computer procedures, tests and analyses, and writes research progress report/curriculum modules on request.
- Engages in the preparation and writing of papers for publication.
- Engages in presentations in relation to the area of Computer Science.
- Contributes data and input towards the submission of extramural funding applications.
- Provides project leadership for grant funded programs and independent supervision of technical and undergraduate staff as directed by Supervisor and/or grant Principal Investigator.
Service:
- Contributes to outreach and recruitment activities for undergraduate certificate and degree programs in Computer Science, and Master’s level computer courses.
- Develops and leads community computer science collaborations for decision support and program development.
- Develops and leads community partnerships for internship, traineeships, and jobs.
- Implements, operates, and maintains Data Science Center classroom, laboratory, and experimental equipment including Cyber CANOE with SAGE interface and advanced computer resources including parallel processing nodes and off-site High Performance Compute Clusters.
- Provides technical and intellectual support to faculty and staff, collaborates with Computer Science and Data Science staff in training and mentoring of undergraduate students.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by Natural Sciences and Mathematics Dean, Data Science, Analytics and Visualization Chair or program chair, and/or grant Principal Investigator.
- Meet faculty responsibilities as described by Chaminade University’s Policy Manual IV.
- Support policies as stated in the Chaminade School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Handbook and in course syllabi.
- Participate in meetings and activities related to the Data Science, Analytics and Visualization and Computer Science Departments, the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Chaminade University
- Demonstrate and maintain a professional relationship with administration, faculty, staff, and students.
- Communicate clearly with administration, faculty, staff, and students.
- Serve as a professional role model for students.
- Maintain high standards and promote excellence in education.
- Demonstrate ongoing professional competency by seeking new knowledge, improving teaching skills, research skills, and remaining current in the academic discipline.
- Collaborate with data collection and tracking student outcomes in support of extramurally funded programs at the request of the Chair in Data Science, Analytics and Visualization and Computer Science.
- Any other duties as assigned by the Chair in Data Science, Analytics and Visualization and Computer Science, and Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Minimum Education
Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or a related field is required.
Minimum Experience
- Experience in an active research team with publications demonstrating areas of Computer Science.
- Experience in project-based and active learning curriculum.
- Prior experience in the preparation and submission of extramural funding applications to agencies such as NSF or NIH.
- Experience teaching mathematics and statistics; algorithms; databases; programming, software and hardware design, development, and implementation; and research or related courses at the undergraduate or graduate level is required.
- Familiarity or experience with Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, High Performance Computing, Cloud Computing, and Cybersecurity.
- Interest and track record in support of diversity and equity efforts relating to STEM careers for minority students.
Minimum Skills:
- Demonstrate expertise in the following technical skill set is required: mathematics, statistics, and algorithms; databases; programming; operating systems and networks; computer architecture; and software and hardware design, development, and implementation.
- Languages: SQL, Python, Java, and other languages are welcome.
- Demonstrated skills in Computer Science research.
- Experience developing, delivering, and assessing active learning and project-based curriculum.
- Experience developing, delivering, and assessing curriculum that engages with community.
- Experience in preparation of manuscripts and grant proposals is required.
- Physical Requirements
Duties involve light work in an office and community setting and requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking inclines. Must be able to lift 20 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills. Must have finger dexterity. Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.
- Other Requirements:
- Depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required. Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and a varying schedule.
