SUMMARY
The Horticulture Worker I is responsible for the design, installation, and maintenance of Park District annual and perennial landscape displays including associated structures. The Horticulture Worker I is also responsible for the construction and maintenance of District signage. The typical work week is 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. However, workweek hours may vary according to weather or seasonal demand. Some overtime hours during peak season are required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent
- Education and/or experience in horticulture, landscaping or agriculture preferred
- Demonstrated ability to understand and work from written and oral instructions
- Ability to operate and maintain vehicles, power equipment and hand tools as listed under “Essential Functions”
- Acquire and maintain a current State of Illinois Pesticide Operator’s License within six months of hire
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License with a clean driving record
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to understand and work from written and oral instructions
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and implement assigned tasks
- Positive “CAN-DO” team attitude
SUPERVISION
The Horticulture Worker I reports directly to the Horticulture Supervisor. The Horticulture Worker I may supervise part-time and seasonal staff on assigned tasks.

CLASSIFICATION

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Follow all Champaign Park District safety policies and perform all work in a manner that ensures the safety of the public, fellow employees, and themselves
- Operate vehicles, mowers, tillers, sod cutters, all types of trimmers, and other power equipment as well as a variety of hand tools in a safe and efficient manner to ensure safety for staff and patrons
- Plant and maintain annual bedding plants, perennials, shrubs, and turf
- Assist in the installation and/or construction of required hardscape features (e.g. retaining walls, bed edging borders, etc.)
- Assist in the design of perennial beds, annual flower beds, planters, and baskets
- Assist in the construction, maintenance, and installation of Park and Flower Island signs
- Maintain an annual written audit of floral displays, landscaping, and signage as assigned
- Inform the supervisor of job progress and/or problems in a timely fashion
- Observe the Park District landscape, features, and facilities. Report problems to the appropriate supervisor
- Become familiar with Park District ordinances and inform the supervisor of violations witnessed
- Make purchases within the limits of District and departmental policies
- Attend required training and meetings
- Other related duties as assigned

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
The activities required to fulfill the duties of this position are significantly physical in nature. These activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Kneeling
- To plant flowers, weed landscaped areas, and other duties as assigned
- Lifting
- Up to 50 lbs. alone and over 50 lbs. with assistance, if needed, to load bags of soil amendments, install landscape timbers, lift lumber or signs, handle plant material, load or unload equipment, etc.
- Handwork
- Operation of power equipment (e.g. tillers, chain saws, hedge trimmers, drills, etc.) and hand tools (e.g. trowels, pruners, shovels, rakes, etc.) all require repetitious gripping and controlling motions
- Twisting
- Examples are listed above.
- Climbing
- Mount/dismount equipment or vehicles, ladder work, etc.
- Push/Pull
- Raking, moving or operating equipment, rope starting small engines, winding and unwinding hoses from reels, etc. .
- Standing
- May be required to stand for long periods of time .
- Sitting
- While operating equipment and vehicles for extended periods of time
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Work activities, including the physiological considerations, may occur in outside weather conditions including extremes of heat, cold, wet and dry and may also occur on rough or inclined terrain
- Exposure is likely to airborne pollens, dusts or molds due to environmental conditions
- Any one of these endeavors may occur for an entire workday or several in a row
