What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Park Gardeners position at Champaign Park District?
SUMMARY
The Horticulture Worker I assists with the installation and maintenance of Park District flower beds and landscaped areas. The typical work week is 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday with the typical season beginning in May and lasting into August. Workweek hours may vary according to weather or seasonal demand. Some overtime hours on the weekend during the peak season may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Valid Illinois Drivers License with a clean driving record
- Education, experience and/or interest in horticulture or landscaping is preferred but not required
- Ability to operate and maintain vehicles, power equipment, and hand tools as listed under Essential Functions
- Demonstrated ability to understand and work from written and oral instructions
- Positive can do team attitude
SUPERVISION
The Horticulture Worker I reports directly to the Horticulture Supervisor.
TRAINING CAN BE OBTAINED THROUGH CHAMPAIGN PARK DISTRICT
- Anyone who will be driving a Champaign Park District vehicle will need to complete and pass a driving test from one of our certified Champaign Park District trainers

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Follows all Champaign Park District safety policies and performs all work in a manner that ensures the safety of the public, volunteers and fellow employees
- Assists with planting annual and perennial flowers
- Assists with maintenance of flower and landscape beds (e.g. weeding, watering, trimming, etc.)
- Operates vehicles in a lawful, safe, and efficient manner
- Operates power equipment (e.g. string trimmers, blowers, etc.) and hand tools with safety and skill
- Maintains vehicles, equipment, and tools as required
- Maintains written job records as required
- Keeps supervisor informed on job problems and/or progress in a timely fashion
- Interacts with fellow employees and the public in a positive manner
- Informs supervisor of job progress and/or problems in a timely fashion
- Makes purchases within limits of District and departmental policies
- Other related duties as assigned by supervisor

- To plant flowers, weed, and install landscape timber, and other duties as assigned

- Carrying plant containers, bags of soil amendments, trash containers, etc. (Departmental policy requires mechanical assistance or teamwork for anything over 70lbs)

- Operation of power equipment (e.g. tillers, chain saws, hedge trimmers, drills, etc.) and hand tools (e.g. trowels, pruners, shovels, rakes, etc.) all require repetitious gripping and controlling motions

- Raking, moving or operating equipment, rope starting small engines, winding and unwinding water hoses, etc.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Work activity may occur in outside weather conditions including extremes of heat, cold, wet, and dry and may also occur on rough or inclined terrain
- Exposure is likely to airborne pollens, dusts, or molds
- Any one of these endeavors may occur for an entire workday or for several workdays in a row
COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS
- Must be willing and able to improve skills and become familiar with Park District work locations
