Summary
The Swim Team Assistant Coach is responsible for supervising swim team practices, providing instruction, and working with the Swim Team Coach in directing the Sholem Swim Team.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 15 years of age
- An understanding of competitive swimming training principles is preferred.
- A knowledge of swimming rules and regulations is preferred.
- Patience and positive attitude.
- Ability to effectively communicate with public and staff and work harmoniously with people in an enthusiastic manner.
- Knowledge of competitive strokes and training techniques
Supervision
The Swim Team Assistant Coach reports directly to the Swim Team Coach.
Classification
- Non-exempt, hourly
- Seasonal (not to exceed six (6) months)
- Season is May to September
Training – Can be obtained through the Champaign Park District
- First Aid, AED, and CPR Certification
- Heads Up Concussion training
- Mandated reporter training
- Harassment prevention training
- Bloodborne pathogen training
- Recreation software system training
- Facility training
Essential Functions
- Follow all Champaign Park District safety policies and perform all work in a manner that ensures the safety of oneself, the public, fellow employees.
- Demonstrate a high level of professionalism and discretion in all interactions, including maintaining strict confidentiality regarding staff information, communications from supervisors, and conversations with parents or patrons. Uphold the Park District’s policies and standards for data privacy and confidentiality at all times.
- Assist the Swim Team Coach in planning daily practice sessions, contributing to the organization and structure of training routines.
- Direct swimmers in practices and meets in accordance with team policies and procedures, ensuring adherence to established guidelines.
- Assist the Swim Team Coach in preparing meet entries, contributing to the efficient management of participant registrations for competitions.
- Communicate program needs or problems to the Swim Team Coach, facilitating open and clear lines of communication for program enhancement.
- Assist with meet preparation, participating in tasks that ensure the smooth execution of swim meets and related activities.
- Assist with the upkeep of the equipment storage space, promoting an organized and efficient storage system for swim team equipment.

Physical Considerations
- Proficient swimming skills are essential for Assistant Coaches to demonstrate proper techniques effectively and assist swimmers in refining their strokes.
- Clear verbal communication skills and the ability to engage with swimmers physically during training sessions are crucial for effective coaching support.
- Physical readiness to respond to any first aid situations or emergencies that may arise during swim team practices.
- May be exposed to pool chemicals.
Environmental Considerations
- Assistant Coaches must adapt to the pool environment, including varying water conditions, temperature, and potential weather changes.
- Assistant coaches need to adapt to varying weather conditions, ensuring the safety and well-being of swimmers.
