Champion is looking for a Safety Specialist to support the work at Palisades Nuclear site. The role will report to the Safety, Health & Environment Manager.

HOW YOU WILL SUPPORT THE TEAM

The Safety Specialist drives the efforts to reduce the risk of job-related accidents, permit non-compliance, and environmental incidents through program participation and monitoring. The Safety Specialist assists with creating and implementing company safety policies to promote occupational health, safety, and environmental (HSE) awareness and ensures exceptionalism in site inspections, trainings, and meetings. The Safety Specialist is highly skilled in performing root cause analyses related to safety trends and creating effective solutions to remedy issues.

Additionally, the Safety Specialist will:

· Assists field supervisors in preparing and auditing compliance of job hazard analyses, safe work permits, safe work plans & practices, environment plans, Pre-Job Briefs, Daily Huddle, Weekly Tailgate Meeting and Monthly Safety Meeting.

  • Assists in incident investigations, reporting, and facilitates incident reviews.
  • Provides training, mentorship, and guidance to teams
  • Maintains employee files (HSE related training, incident investigations)
  • Enforcing compliance of HSE and transportation programs
  • Perform other duties, as assigned, in support of the HSE Strategic Plan
  • Participating in company HSE committees
  • Assist in the execution of the jobsite safety plans
  • Coordinates field investigations for Health and Safety accidents/incidents.
  • Conducts and documents site safety inspections and submits reports to the Project Management team and Safety Manager.
  • Evaluates Near Miss and Good Catch observation cards.
  • Coaches safe work behaviors with employees to obtain positive results.
  • Sets SMART goals and works toward delivering on them.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TEAM

To be successful, the ideal candidate should bring most of the following experiences and attributes to the role.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field preferred
  • Understanding of how maintenance, modifications and construction is completed in a Nuclear setting
  • At least 5 years in a similar role is expected
  • Nuclear experience is critical to be successful in the role
  • In-depth understanding of local, state, and federal HSE regulations
  • Familiarity with risk assessment methodologies and incident investigation techniques
  • Excellent communication skills including written, verbal, listening, and customer service skills with the ability to effectively communicate with and work well with others to manage projects and meetings
  • Have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence people and drive change
  • Exceptional organizational skills with high consideration to detail
  • Must possess time management skills and can meet deadlines
  • Works well independently and in a group environment
  • Has the ability to deliver internal training effectively
  • Has critical thinking and problem-solving skills but is able to understand the department’s overall objectives
  • Must be able to be entrusted with confidential information
  • Familiar with using various office equipment, computers and various programs including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, networking and cloud-based systems.
